For the last 30+ years, I’ve had such terrible vision that blind as a bat was basically part of my identity.
In 2020, I learned about a procedure called EVO ICL, but with COVID + having a baby, I ended up putting it off. I couldn’t do LASIK since it requires lasering off part of your eye tissue, and when your prescription is that high, there isn’t enough tissue for them to laser off. Enter EVO ICL: a procedure that implants a collamer lens into the front of your eye, like a permanent contact lens aka bionic eyeballs.

I finally decided to pull the trigger last fall, and my optometrist from @honolulueyeclinic referred me to @drnedanikpoor at @jenkinseyecare . Once I decided I was all in, I was FSA-maxxing my 2026 funds and set a surgery date for this year.

Fast forward to this August, when I went in for my one-month pre-op checkup, where they pretty much run every test known to mankind on your eyes, including an eyeball ultrasound. Once you’re cleared, you have to get an actual pre-op medical clearance physical done and stop wearing contacts three days before surgery.

On surgery day, you check in, receive a LOT of numbing and dilating eye drops, and then wait for your turn. Fun fact: you’re awake for the entire process, but there’s very little discomfort. Each eye takes about 20 minutes, and by the time you walk out (yes, like you actually walk yourself out of the operating room), your ride is waiting and you head home.

There’s a same-day checkup later that afternoon and another one 24 hours later. My vision at the 24-hour post-op checkup was 20/15, and at the one-week post-op checkup, it was 20/10. (For reference, a -7 is like 20/1000). Basically, I had unlocked 4K Ultra HD vision.

Recovery was really easy. The only real downtime was the first 1-2 days, and that’s mostly because your pupils are super dilated. It’s about to be 1 month post surgery and the biggest adjustment has been how convenienced my life has gotten w/out glasses or contacts. My obaachan, the original Taco Bell Queen, purple haired ninja. She could out pace any of us even while walking with a cane, which had a dual purpose as a jabbing stick. We joked she was from a ninja family (something we actually could not confirm or deny, as she lost both her real and adopted parents when she was still a teen). Having lived through post-war Japan, she was resilient, living her entire life with the mindset of always being appreciative with what you had. We spent most summers growing up at their home in her samurai home in Japan, where she lived in by herself after my grandpa passed in 2006, up until a few years before covid. A matriarch of our unit, she never let us go hungry, and always ensured there was food on the table for us to eat. She was a force to be reckoned with, just like all the other women in my family. i can only imagine the welcoming reception on the other side ❤️ by @katweena
