Happy Birthday, my love 😘🐾♥️🎂🦴 by @katy.tom

Tonight, as @fcbarcelona play a frosty @uefa @championsleague match in Prague against @slaviapraha I can’t help but go back to 2019.

That year, I had the honour of serving as the Spanish interpreter for all official meetings between the boards and presidents of both clubs. Slavia called that fixture “the match of the decade” at the time — and for me personally, it was a true highlight of my career and an experience I’ll never forget.

What stayed with me most was the long, unhurried dinner. Conversations flowed easily, moving from football to history, from strategy to personal memories. Both presidents were genuinely curious, exchanging stories about their clubs with real respect and fascination.

Bet you didn’t know the two clubs actually share a remarkable historical connection.

I hope those present will allow me to share a personal memory. One of the highlights of the evening was the presentation of a faithful replica of the most famous trophy Slavia has ever won—the Mitropa Cup🏆 The original trophy, won in 1938, is unique: none of the other winners from the years 1927–1939 still possess it. Slavia decided to ceremonially present this recreated trophy during their UEFA Champions League match with Barcelona.

And there’s a beautiful story behind it. On 11 September 1938, the Mitropa Cup was lifted by Slavia’s captain Ferdinand Daučík — who, twelve years later, became HEAD COACH of FC Barcelona and went on to win numerous trophies with the club, including two league titles. In the first half of the 20th century, the Mitropa Cup was the most prestigious club competition in Europe, featuring teams like Inter (then Ambrosiana), Juventus, AS Roma, Rapid Vienna, Austria Vienna — and Slavia.

As a final personal note, one of the most rewarding moments for me was receiving congratulations from both club presidents — for my Spanish. It may have been a brief moment for the two presidents, but a big moment of professional satisfaction which will stay with me forever.

Please remember: the work you do alone, continuously, behind closed doors—offen full of doubt and questioning your life choices—will one day pay off in the most rewarding ways ⚽✨ by @katy.tom
