I recently was re reading Aisegul Savas’ Anthropologists as slow as I could, deliberately stretching and taking my time with it. As it was helping me process our move to Sydney. its quiet attention to the ways we observe, inhabit and make sense of the world around us.

Lately, I’ve been noticing my own surroundings differently. A Sunday spent walking, reading, stopping at op shops, watching strangers pass by. The small rituals that begin almost without us noticing: a favourite cafe, our friendly majestic eucalyptus tree, a place we keep returning to, the people whose names we start to remember.

Perhaps this is how a new place becomes home. Not through one big moment, but through the accumulation of tiny encounters, gestures and observations that slowly make the unfamiliar feel intimate.

July was challenging. So August came to rescue. Long walks with a plan, short accidental naps in between days of soaking in gentle friendship. Getting to know yourself through experiencing life with others is a gift I learn to not forget to appreciate. Time flies. With device in our hands and thoughts of others consumed by our heads. I try to retreat. Sometimes successful.

August has been kind and gentle, and thoughtful. I hear inner voice of my ego making friends with abandoned wisdom. It soothes me. These voices. I can hear them smiling.
