these cheery little watercolors gave me another chance to just be excited about the group of paintings assembled @turnerfineart for this october.

oil paint builds and stacks and there’s figuring and scraping and i work on my plan as i go. watercolor works best for me when i start with a clean plan and stick with it. sometimes its good to use as a tool to figure things out, but this isn’t the first time ive just used it to go one more round with some imagery that just started making sense to me and i wanted to spend a little more time with. that’s these.

thursday oct 15, 5-7pm is a really good time to swing into Turner Fine Art in Jackson Hole and have a little snack and chat with me or other lovely people who chose to do the same thing at the same time as you. i promise ill be there!

this painting holds a feeling of warmth and charmI am really proud I captured. it is based on an incredible photo @jaredspieker took. i often slide by his photos and come to a halt as i am in awe of the soul and breadth of the world he sees, captures and shares. guys got an eye and im mighty lucky he let me spend way too much time trying to puzzle together this piece.

i haven’t walked in the winds, but when people say they’re going I always know they really want to be doing just that and they will come back a little more themselves with a smile gracing their face just a little easier than when the left. ..anyway thats the trend ive noticed. when i was little my parents took me to the reno air races and for the remainder of my short years, my chosen career path if anyone asked was to be a wing walker. this ambition has changed and i think id rather be a wind walker. there’s the title. #thankyouiloveyou #windriverrange #wildwest #hike #paintpaintpaint by @katyannfox

this is one of my favorite people’s gramma and some of my favorite people showed up last night to stand surrounded by these paintings i just made. @turnerfineart i’m blown away by how warm and welcoming and what an honor it is to hang on your walls. so much gratitude. this show is really living up to its name, thank you for these lessons in time and gratitude. show hangs the whole month of october. go see and tell me how it makes you feel 🗽🙏🥳

this painting is titled “landline”. this woman stirs up the pride and simplicity and connectedness that existed even before cell phones. her calm, her ease…she’s a classic.

this is my mama’s house. i grew up in the house next door and spent most of my childhood making trips through this ditch between the two houses because my grandparents still lived in this one back then. this painting is from one of so many photographs my friend sends me when he drives by. growing up on a thoroughfare is kinda funny but i don’t know if i love any place more than this one. i raised my 4-H steers in the barn at the top of the hill, learned to ski on the mountain in the background, i backed our cars into each other in that driveway, and rode my horse the four mile block around this house more times than i could count… so many silly memories. i wish some of them maybe weren’t true and that i could remember a few more but all in all, wouldn’t change a thing. a prairie is a pretty great spot to grow up.

oh this place! how is it on this planet? some places along the route get grouped with other places but not this one. it’s been a meeting point, a destination, a surprise, a mystery to me in the times i have visited it. the first time i saw it in my adult life; i had won a pair of skis and needed money more than skis so i sold them on facebook. this guy from montana wanted the coombbacks so i met him at old faithful lodge…like you do with strangers…and he passed my weirdo test. he had a good dog and he was the same height as me (hence the ski compatibility). we carried out the planned transaction but then he looked at me and asked if i wanted to go look at grand prismatic with him cuz it was his favorite spot and it was his birthday. i agreed. i followed to park and then had to admit as we started up the hill to get the view that i could barely walk downhill because i had just tried to walk up buck mountain and my brain and my shoes had decided that my quads would be absolutely shot for the following days. he laughed at me and i was glad i let him show me his favorite view and i hope he has had great ski runs on those skis.

i promise the tetons aren’t in every painting for this show, take it from me! just these last two, the first two…then hold on to your horses for the true variety show.
.
this painting is a slower version of a painting i did during driggs plein air this summer. it was 4:30am, full moon, perfect temperature and i parked at the sheep bridge trailhead in teton canyon and was super confused by the low stars. the stars were below the skyline! then i realized it was folks making their grand teton summit bid. so cool. the funny thing is—oddities and surprises don’t always make enough sense to make into a painting, but this blew me away and i was thrilled by the way the paint worked. ok ok. enough about that.

doors open @turnerfineart with my show - TAKE IT FROM ME - and i’ll be standing around hoping to do a conversational or literal twirl with you on october 2.

i’ve overthought nearly every aspect of this show and honestly enjoyed doing it. my brother loved measuring tapes when he was a kid, but all measurements of anything at all were either 10 or 2. @tony2boots took this photo in 2018 when he was out walking like he does. i’ve painted it a few times-like i do, but always wanted to see it bigger—like BIG. maybe this is big enough.

2026 Jackson Hole Quick Draw in the books 💫
.
We lucked out for weather and energy and so many things just felt really good, despite the armpit sweats and timers. This event feels different than every other day of my life every year and I lose a little sleep and fill my heart to overflowing and consider just joining a circus. This year, no different, but I’m not ready to join a circus. I’m gonna keep painting.

do you ever wonder what the wildlife would type up and have the signs and billboards along the roads say? maybe: bring snacks, shhhhh, stay home, can i borrow your vehicle, welcome. who knows? the bright yellow “let them cross” made me smile and think when i was headed north to paint last night. 10,000 thank yous to @turnerfineart and @trianglexranch for bringing such a delightful crew and sharing stories and your setting.

i’m basically a full blown wildlife painter now. see the birds? there are five of them. this painting is of spring and now it’s fall and man oh man! there have been some good days in between. feeling alive these crisp mornings and glad to be witnessing the continual color shifts. love yall out there. i think its fall arts fest so we best be celebrating.

some skies are pink
and i love pink.

i was gonna crop my feet out but then liked how the pink toenails reinforced my appreciation of pink tones. i still like pink, i still don’t like shoes.
.
i just got back from braun which is an alternate universe i get to travel to each year and have conversations that transcend time and pull me closer to folks who live far far from my daily life but so so close to my heart and simply make me a better and happier person in the daily life i get to returned to. it’s funny tho, it really is some sort of time travel - ive made it to challis in august for maybe 17 years minus two - and im back in jackson trying to make the biggest bowl of my life and i put it on the shelf it should have gone on when i learned to make pottery 13 years ago. that’s not the right shelf for today’s world but i guess this is a week of time travel, poor air quality, and trying hard. we moved the bowl to the right shelf and i’m gonna make a bigger better bowl next week and hopefully move more things to a better spot. until then—-good luck in the pink skies we are living in. #beautybounds #thankyoubraun #movealong #barefeet #paintpaintpaint by @katyannfox

high on the list

whether im talking about my favorite hikes list, my favorite people list, or favorite activity list…this memory checks all the boxes. my brother and one of my favorite souls from art school showed up on my stoop last fall and we did our best to discuss all topics, remember all the funniest stories, stand tall and get amped for all the antics we would go about for the next chunk of our lives. shawn had locked himself out of his car and already walked too far this day, but the light on the mountains was perfect and so was just about everything else. i love paint and i love the tetons and so here is this painting.
