An extraordinary feeling fills such places. I felt an ineffable longing for the past; the house brought back memories of my childhood, of growing up at my grandparents’ home, chasing sunbeams on the powder-pink wallpaper patterned with roses, and plucking at the silk fringe of a grand Indian carpet. An entire era, echoed in the very breath of the objects around me and gone forever, flashed through my mind.

It was here that Chaplin wrote his letters, received his guests, and dined. The sense of closeness to the great actor was truly overwhelming.

The setting itself is enchanting. Before the house lies a spacious meadow, opening onto a view of distant blue mountains and the glassy surface of the lake, reflecting the ash-grey density of the sky.
