Many years ago we had pigs, and swore we would never have them again! Well alas, we changed our minds and picked these two up a few weeks ago.

Last time we had pigs was when we lived off grid with more difficult water access, and no plan.
Farming isn’t as challenging when you have sufficient water access and modern-day amenities 😂.

We named them Chiquita and Banana 🍌

Mmmm… organic mini carrots for my soup 🥣🥕
One day I’ll figure out this whole carrot-growing thing 💀

Did these tiny carrots take me months to grow? Yep.
Did I end up with a few decent-sized ones too? Also yep. 😂

🦋🌸 Just a monarch having a little snack on the zinnias.

Here are a few wild monarch facts:

🗺️ They migrate thousands of kilometres. The monarchs we see here in Ontario can travel all the way to the mountains of central Mexico for the winter.

⏳ Their lifespan depends on the generation. Most summer monarchs live only about 2–6 weeks. But the special “migratory generation” born in late summer can live 8 months or more, allowing them to make the long journey south.

🌿 Monarch caterpillars have one very specific requirement: milkweed. Monarch caterpillars can only eat milkweed, which is why planting native milkweed is so important for monarchs.

Meanwhile, the adults are happy to fuel up on nectar from flowers like these zinnias. 🌸

One more reason to leave room in the garden for flowers- what we grow can nourish so much more than ourselves.

Garlic cleanup day 🧄🌱

After harvesting, garlic needs time to cure before it’s trimmed and stored. We hang ours somewhere dry and well-ventilated for several (4+) weeks so the outer layers can dry and form that protective papery skin.

Once the necks are completely dry and the leaves have browned, it’s time to trim the roots, cut back the stalks and gently brush away the loose dirt.

Proper curing is one of the most important steps for getting garlic to last through the winter. The goal is dry, firm bulbs with a nice wrapper- ready for the pantry and months of homegrown meals.
As I clean each bulb, I’m also checking for any signs of rot or damage. Anything I find with spoilage gets set aside for immediate use rather than going into long-term storage

One of the very first things I ever made when I was learning to can is Cowboy Candy and it’s still one of my favourites! I love how versatile it is. It’s sweet, spicy, tangy, and SO good on just about everything.

🌶️ Cowboy Candy🌶️

Makes about 4 pints

• 4 lb jalapeños, sliced into ¼-inch rings
• 3 cups 5% acidity vinegar (white or apple cider)
• 4 cups sugar
• 2 tsp turmeric
• 1 tsp chili flakes (optional)
• 2 tsp mustard seed (optional)
• 2 tsp salt (optional)

Directions

1. Slice your jalapeños into ¼-inch rings (wearing gloves might be a good idea!)
2. Combine vinegar, sugar, turmeric and any optional seasonings in a large pot.
3. Bring to a boil, stirring until the sugar dissolves.
4. Add the jalapeños and reduce heat. Simmer for 15 minutes, until the peppers darken and absorb some of the syrup.
5. Ladle hot peppers and syrup into hot pint jars, leaving ½-inch headspace.
6. Remove air bubbles and wipe the rims clean.
7. Apply lids and bands fingertip-tight.
8. Process in a boiling-water canner for 15 minutes.
9. Remove jars and let cool undisturbed for 12–24 hours. Check the seals.

Sweet and spicy jalepenos- a great place to start if you’re learning to can! 🫙🌶️

A few of my favourite ways to use it:
🌶️ On burgers & sandwiches
🧀 Over cream cheese with crackers
🥩 Alongside grilled meats
🌮 On tacos & nachos
🍗 Added to chicken or pulled pork
🫙 Or straight from the jar… because let’s be honest 😂
