Katz College welcomed Julia Kogan Ehrlich for "Cybersecurity, AI & Leadership," a guest lecture on the forces shaping the future of technology.
ㅤ
Julia is a technology leader, angel investor and strategic advisor. A former Major in the IDF's elite Unit 8200, she spent nine years in Israeli intelligence leading large-scale technology and intelligence teams, then five years at BioCatch working with some of the world's largest financial institutions on cybersecurity and digital fraud.
ㅤ
Students and guests heard her perspective on where cybersecurity, AI, entrepreneurship and innovation meet, and what it takes to lead in fields that change this quickly. The evening closed with an interactive Q&A on building a career and making an impact in tech.
ㅤ
"We are so grateful to Julia for sharing her experience and insight with our students," said Sivan Tehila, director of the #KatzCollege’s M.S. in Cybersecurity and CEO/Founder of Onyxia Cyber. "Hearing directly from a leader who has worked at the highest levels of intelligence, industry and investing gives our students a clear picture of what's possible in these fields."
ㅤ
Thank you, Julia, for an inspiring evening, and thank you to everyone who joined us!

The Katz School is now Katz College of Science and Health!
ㅤ
Last Spring, Yeshiva University elevated the Katz School to Katz College of Science and Health, recognizing close to a decade of growth in enrollment, programs and impact, and the generosity of the Katz family.
ㅤ
Yeshiva University’s relationship with the Katz family spans generations. Mordecai “Morty” Katz, who passed away in 2021, was a Yeshiva University alumnus and longtime Trustee whose leadership and philanthropy helped shape the institution across its different schools. Alongside his wife, Dr. Nicky Katz, who earned her medical degree at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Morty was the driving force behind the Katz School, guided by a shared conviction that investing in people is the surest way to strengthen communities.
ㅤ
“My husband believed the most meaningful investment you can make is in people and their education,” said Dr. Katz. “Education shaped both of our lives, and he wanted the Katz School to be ambitious and excellent—demanding the very best—while remaining firmly rooted in Jewish values. Seeing it grow into a college defined by excellence, purpose and impact would have filled him with pride.”

Katz College Awards Research Grants for Faculty Projects in AI, Health and Life Sciences
ㅤ
The #KatzCollege awarded seven faculty research grants for 2026-27. The projects range from an AI tool that could catch a serious heart and lung condition earlier and a wearable device that reads American Sign Language fingerspelling to glowing biosensors and new strategies to fight against colorectal cancer.
ㅤ
“This initiative is designed to stimulate new research and expand existing studies that increase Katz College's visibility while also creating research opportunities for full-time graduate students,” said Dr. Paul Russo, dean of Katz College. “The diverse research initiatives reflect the school's commitment to advancing science, technology and healthcare to solve pressing real-world problems.”
ㅤ
Congratulations to the grant winners:

In an interview taped at Channel 10's studio on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange, Sivan Tehila, founder and CEO of Onyxia Cyber and director of #KatzCollege's master's in cybersecurity, discussed security tool sprawl, the shift from visibility to actionability, and how AI is redrawing entry-level cyber roles with Anat Katz, Co-Founder & Chief Business Officer at 46C Group.
ㅤ
"The problem is not that products are lacking. There are plenty of products, but a lot of the time that is what creates more complexity," said Tehila. "Security leaders are sitting on a lot of data and a lot of products, and when they need a simple answer they have to go hunting for it across all of them."
ㅤ
Asked whether tools like ChatGPT and Claude make cybersecurity companies obsolete, Tehila was direct: "Unequivocally, we are relevant. AI can help with visibility and transparency up to a point. You still need engineers with real capability and professional experience to reach high-quality results."
ㅤ
On what that means for training the next generation: "What used to be entry-level roles solving problems at a technical level, very repetitive work, agents can already do today. What the industry needs is people with business understanding and the ability to work alongside AI." She pointed to Katz College's AI labs and cybersecurity operations center, and cited Gartner's projection that tier-1 roles will give way to security engineering roles by 2030.

Tirth Joshi, a student in the Katz School’s M.S. in Artificial Intelligence, won Best Poster at Network Science Informs AI 2026, a satellite event of the NetSci Conference 2026, for developing a new way to shrink large collections of data while preserving the features that reveal how information is organized.
ㅤ
“Most data analysis gets expensive as datasets grow,” said Joshi. “A landmark coreset is a small subset of the data chosen to stand in for the whole thing, so you can run the expensive computation on 250 points instead of 2,500 and still get an answer close to the truth.”
ㅤ
Existing approaches spread selected points throughout the data for broad coverage, but Joshi found this can miss small but important areas, like where two groups meet or where regions connect through a narrow bridge. He compares it to placing weather stations: spreading them evenly across a country gives good overall coverage, but misses the coastlines and mountain passes where conditions actually change.
ㅤ
“My argument is that coverage alone treats the dataset as a cloud of points and ignores the fact that data usually has a shape,” said Joshi. “The places that define the shape, the boundaries, the transitions, the thin connections, are exactly the places a coverage criterion has no reason to prioritize.”
ㅤ
Possible applications include creating simpler visual displays of complicated data, identifying groups within data and helping computer systems decide which examples are most useful to examine.

Here's to a year of collaboration. 🤝
ㅤ
Dr. Tamar Avnet, head of graduate programs at Sy Syms School of Business Graduate Programs, and Sivan Tehila, director of the M.S. in Cybersecurity at the Katz College of Science and Health, are opening the year together.
ㅤ
This fall, we welcomed students in our MBA NYC Campus, online MBA, M.S. in Management and M.S. in Finance at a moment when finance and security have become the same conversation. Risk management is no longer only a security leader's job. It belongs to business leaders too, and that is exactly where these two schools meet.
ㅤ
"AI is becoming a big risk for financial institutions and almost any other industry," said Sivan. "What we're doing in our program is giving students the hands-on experience they need to prevent those breaches."
ㅤ
Wishing all of our #SySymsGrad and #KatzCollege students success this fall!

That's a wrap on the didactic year for the Katz School's M.S. in Physician Assistant Studies Class of 2027!
ㅤ
Last month, students in the Katz School's PA program gathered with faculty and families to mark the milestone. Dr. Lorraine Cashin, PA-C, Assistant Dean and PA Program Director, offered remarks, followed by the cohort president and vice president and a celebration over brunch.
ㅤ
"Our students finish the didactic year having learned to think like clinicians. I have every confidence in the care they will bring to their patients and to the teams they join at our clinical sites," said Dr. Cashin.
ㅤ
The first year of the 86-credit program prepares students to deliver patient-centered care confidently and competently on interdisciplinary health care teams. Didactic lectures are complemented through hands-on training in state-of-the-art virtual cadaver and simulation laboratories, where students work through simulated patient-care experiences.
ㅤ
The clinical year puts that preparation to work. Each student rotates through eight five-week core disciplines and two five-week electives at clinical sites throughout the New York area, spanning family medicine, primary care, internal medicine, surgery, emergency medicine, women's health, pediatrics and behavioral health.
ㅤ
Wishing everyone the best of luck as they begin the exciting new chapter in clinical year!
