Why I Love Amul’s Spiced Buttermilk So Much

During my childhood, my grandfather, my Nanuji, was my whole world. I had lost my other grandfather too young to remember him, so Nanuji was the only grandfather I truly knew. And with him came one of the simplest yet most meaningful traditions of my life.

Every time I landed in India, I would run into his arms for a huge hug, overflowing with excitement. And without fail, the very first thing I’d say was, “Let’s go get some buttermilk.” He was the one who introduced me to Amul’s Spiced Buttermilk, a drink I still love to this day.

It became our ritual. We’d drop the bags at home and immediately head downstairs to buy not just one, but at least ten cartons, all of which would be finished by the end of the day. But looking back now, it wasn’t really about the buttermilk. It was about us.

It was the slow walk to the store.
The little conversations.
The chocolates and candies we’d sneak in.
The joy of simply being together.

I was blessed with a wise, loving, and deeply supportive grandfather, a man who genuinely cared about my life, my work, and every crazy adventure I chased. He celebrated every small achievement of mine and always believed I was meant to succeed.

Today, every time I drink Amul’s Spiced Buttermilk, it isn’t just a drink. It’s a memory. A thank you. A moment that brings me back to him.

So I dedicate every sip to you, Nanuji.

Yesterday was a tough day for my family and I. My grandmother, Saraswathi Ramakrishnan passed away peacefully in her sleep last night. She lived an incredible 82 year life who was absolutely brilliant, adventurous and extremely lovable. During my life in Singapore, she lived with us for almost 2-3 years. She traveled the world with us, exploring all of Asia and Europe with my parents and I, going on elephant rides, crazy water rafting activities, water slides, and many more, all when she was in her 70s! However, the best memory I have of her is when we used to share the same bedroom in Singapore. I had the top bunk and she would get the below bunk obviously. Every night right after mom tucked us into bed, she would ask me about my latest girl crushes, give me advice on how I should approach a girl and don’t be mean to them, how my cricket team was doing, tell me the latest gossips in our family, and most importantly did I pass math finally? I miss those nights with her because those were moments I connected with her the most and reasons why I will always love her. The only regret I have with her, I should have taught her how to accept my follow request before she left, hopefully the afterlife can teach her. Joke aside, this will be a lasting tribute and remembrance of one of the greatest women in my life. Love you Amma ❤️ by @kausi8
