sampai nanti teman2!

as the inaugural deputy public affairs officer for the us consulate in surabaya, and the only black woman public affairs practitioner for the united states these past two years, i’m honored that indonesia was my first diplomatic assignment.

from helping register americans with @blackinbali to vote in the 2024 presidential election to hopping out of military helicopters as a press officer, there truly isn’t a typical day in a (gen z) diplomat’s life. this assignment was complex and at times isolating; 10,000 miles away from my community. i’m grateful to my loved ones and mentors who held me through and accountable every step of the way, reminding that i am where i need to be. 60+ flights, 30 core projects, and countless memories—terima kasih banyak 🌎🇮🇩 by @kay.mads

Last week, I celebrated the life and legacy of my mentor and Spelman sister, Ambassador Ruth A. Davis (C’ 65). Linked hand-in-hand with Spelman sisters from classes 1965 to 2021, we sung the Spelman hymn to bid farewell to our beloved sister. Ambassador, you are truly missed.

When I first met the Ambassador in 2019, I remember her sharing her Spelman journey with me, emphasizing how the sisterhood changed her life. I’m happy to say that it has done the same for me as well. The sisterhood has brought me joy, sadness, laughter, frustration, tribulations, trials and most importantly, a sacred bond shared with 21,000+ alumnae.

From creating @thebluerecord to serving overseas as a U.S. diplomat alongside my Spelman sisters, I’ve been blessed beyond measure to grow in sisterhood during and beyond my time at Spelman. These are a few memories that capture the warmth and love I feel when I fellowship with Spelman sisters/siblings. It is times like these that I find strength and take comfort in the final stanzas of our college’s hymn:

Beacons of heavenly light,
Undaunted by the fight;
And when life’s race is won,
Thy noble work is done,
Oh God, forever bind
Our hearts to thine. by @kay.mads
