POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
I'm so excited to announce our short film 'Our Grandmother the Inlet' has been completed and will be released later this year!!! I'm so incredibly thankful to the team who helped put this together! Especially @jaimebeijaflor !! Making our dreams come true!! This means so much to me. I hope this falls into the hearts of the people who watch so they can see the water the way my ancestors and I do.
We will later launch an impact to spread the film's message that water has rights as it has relations, stories to tell, and life to give.

Much love,
Kayah George
Granddaughter of the Inlet

Our Grandmother the Inlet is a short film featuring Kayah George and her grandmother Ta7a. The film is a reciprocal love letter to the inlet portraying Kayah’s connection to the water, which in the Tsleil-Waututh Nation is considered to be their oldest grandmother and place of creation. Illustrating the hardship of industry destruction on the mental health of indigenous youth and the spirit of gentle reclamation of love and connection to culture, water, and land as kin and relatives. The film vehicles powerful, poised, textured imagery with cultural inflections and past and present Indigenous-led struggles embedded within them, carrying a timely and relevant message.

Its official ‘Our Grandmother The Inlet’ will have its world premiere on September 29th 8:30 at The Vancouver International Film Festival! (@viffest)
This has been so joyous and healing to create. It’s been nearly four years since @jaimebeijaflor and I met to discuss the idea, and so much has happened since then. The process of making this has changed my life.
And I’m so grateful for the team that helped put this together! Every person who worked on this had so much heart and passion. I’m speechless and can’t wait to share this with the world.

* 	Synopsis
*
* A hybrid documentary film that delves into the lives of Kayah George, a young Indigenous woman, and her grandmother Ta7a, the daughter of the renowned Chief Dan George. Delving into their ancestral lineage, the film takes you on a poignant journey as it highlights the significance of Kayah’s deep connection to water, revered in the Tsleil-Waututh Nation as their oldest grandmother and the birthplace of creation. Amidst the backdrop of industry dominance, the film sheds light on the mental health challenges faced by Indigenous youth and their enduring spirit of gentle reclamation as they strive to reconnect with their culture, water, and land as kin and relatives. With its powerful imagery, infused with cultural nuances and the echoes of past and present Indigenous-led struggles, this timely production carries a profound and relevant message.

That's a wrap! Thank you to everyone who joined us for our screening + discussion of Our Grandmother the Inlet last month 🎞️ 🌊 ❤️ It was an honour to have filmmakers @kayahgeorge and @jaimebeijaflor share their feelings and experience in making the film, which shaped a discussion on how we can build meaningful solidarity + our hopes for a more climate equitable future 🌎 ✊

The event also brought attention to the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority's plans to dredge the Burrard Inlet by September 2026. Attendees participated in a teach-in that included ways to take action to stop the dredging. We encourage everyone to visit the link in our bio containing an action toolkit on the issue. by @kayahgeorge

Our Grandmother the Inlet had its sold-out world premiere at the Vancouver International Film Festival. Where it was named honorable mention for best Canadian short film!
Friends, family and community came through and made it such a special night!
Our film is alive and officially out in the world.
I can’t thank the team that helped us put this together enough! Especially @jaimebeijaflor @shelbymanton @pbandjelly and @farhadghaderi_
Every person was with the spirit of it, and we couldn’t have done it without them!

Also, shout out to @yolondaskelton for this incredible dress that represents the coast Salish peoples being woven together by the ocean, much like woven Cedar. As soon as I tried it on, we both knew it was right and represented many of the themes of the film.
And @servinglooksbysamanthadawes for hair and makeup, she wove shells into my braided hair😍
Everything was absolutely intentional. And represented different themes of the water.

I’m so overwhelmed. Everything surpassed expectations. I’m at a loss of words, love you all so much😭❤️❤️ taken in Vancouver International Film Festival by @kayahgeorge
