Juan Chiavassa isn’t standing still. The acclaim for his debut album, the star-studded Fourth Generation, would have been enough to sustain him far into the future, but he’s too busy playing with the Mike Stern band and honing his production skills with Julieta Rada’s Grammy-nominated Candombe to rest on his laurels.

Now he’s back with another project under his own name: stripping things back down to basics to explore his deep and abiding love for the jazz tradition of his adopted New York City hometown to create a record exploring the classic piano trio format.

I just can’t hold it in anymore. Last year at @jazzatthebolt a quartet led by @ralph.a.moore graced the stage for 2 amazing sets before heading into the studio to make what would become Convergence!

With the help of @creativebcs Record In BC program I was able to fulfill a dream of producing a recording of Ralph’s for @cellarlive

The incredible @kayemode served as the musical director composing some really great tunes and arranging a few others. The incomparable rhythm team of @newyorkp7 ane drummer @lewisnashdrums made everything sound even better!

While the release cycle doesn’t start until October 2nd when I opened my email and got the cover from @perrykchua I just had to make a post!

Mingus Big Band, live in The Pocket, every Monday!

From last week’s performance, here’s a few ‘neighborhoods’ from Charles Mingus’ composition “New York Sketchbook,” as interpreted by piano-maestro David Kikoski, the piece’s featured soloist. Did you know Mingus employed two pianists for the original recording? The composition was initially titled “Tourist in Manhattan,” written and debuted in 1956 as a musical voyage through the various neighborhoods of the city, each one with its own unique identity and pace of life, which #Mingus captured and represented in sound. by @kayemode

Jazz is alive and well in NYC!!! Just after Jazz Cultural opened on 46th Street a few months ago, a new club opened on the same street TODAY: enter #ThePocketJazzClub @thepocketnyc, from the same people who gave us Jazz Standard (until when it closed during the pandemic).
Opening concert was courtesy of The Mingus Big Band @mingusbigband (which started at Fez and had a weekly night at Jazz Standard) with David Kikoski @kayemode (whose last album I just recorded and mixed) on piano.
Sound at this venue will be good cause my man Rocky Russo @recordsbyrocky and Matt Kirschling @deepstate_yoda taken in The Pocket Jazz Club by @kayemode
