Our annual reminder, brought to you by campaigner @kaylinmcl95 💙

Scars, marks and visible differences aren’t scary. So why do we keep seeing them used to make characters look frightening, in film, tv and the media we consume.

When scars, burns and visible differences are repeatedly used as a shorthand for villains, monsters or characters we’re meant to fear, it can reinforce the idea that looking different is something to be scared of.

These messages don’t just stay on screen. They can show up in the real world, too, including at Halloween - when scars and visible differences are sometimes added to costumes to make them more frightening, shocking or ‘creepy’.

For the millions of people living with a visible difference, these aren’t just fun accessories that can be taken off at the end of the night, or wiped away. They’re part of everyday life.

This Halloween, please think twice before using visible difference as a costume, and start thinking about the messages we’re sending when we do.

Scars, marks and visible differences are part of life, they’re not a costume. 🦋

Dear little me,

You don’t know the words “cleft” or “disability” yet. You just know you feel different.

One day you’ll understand why. You’ll learn the name of your condition, you’ll realise you’re not alone, and you’ll slowly stop seeing yourself as someone who just had to “fit in.”

Different was never something to hide.

This Disability Pride Month and Cleft & Craniofacial Awareness Month, I wish you knew sooner that there was never anything wrong with you.

I thought I’d start by sharing a few photos of me through the years 💗

Looking back at these photos reminds me just how much has happened in 30 years. The hospital appointments, the surgeries, the days I felt really confident and the days I wanted to hide.

This month I’m going to share more of my story. Not because I think it’s anything special, but because I know how important it is for people with facial differences to be seen, and for others to understand what life can actually look like 💞 #DisabilityPrideMonth
