Come see the piece hanging on a gallery wall this Thursday for the opening reception! Below is my artist statement.

I’m interested in exploring portraiture through layered imagery instead of a person in front of the camera. Identity is created throughout a lifetime, both through the individual and their ancestors before them. My mission is to create imagery that nods at the complex stories each person holds.

The image I have presented for your consideration allow the subject to not only be the focus but the storyteller. Since they are not fully in view the audience is called to imagine who this person is. Ms. Anne reaches across time summoning a version of herself that lives in memory and narrative.

Is the truest portrait of a person at their best or a view into their story?

I met Dee Barnes when I photographed her for GA Biz, check it out in my stories. 😉 We hit it off that day and started talking about taking some imagery to support her goals. @fbmakeup handled the hair & makeup and @_michellecarmona was helping me sling lights. I’m proud of the work we created together and am looking forward to see Dee keep rocking it.

For America’s 250th anniversary I spent the Fourth of July up in Blue Ridge at the Swan Drive-in. MLB threw a party where attendees could watch the game at a drive-in with fireworks, games, and ballpark food favorites. I had nearly as much fun covering it as those did attending. (My favorite photo is the last one - keep scrolling.) Tell me which one makes you think about us in r 250th year.

Recent work for Elk Dental! I have never been in a dental office quite like it. There is so much natural light, a modern, open feel, an emphasis on sustainability, in an old building full of character. If you’re looking for a new dentist (or a change), especially if you have any dental anxiety, I would fully recommend going to see Dr. Elk @elkdentaldecatur . The vibes are unbeatable!

Here’s my portion of the show that was hung for the Colorado Creative Industries Summit at AR Mitchell. I created three clotheslines using nails & rustic twine and secured prints with weathered clothespins. Some of the prints were from a solo exhibition I had at Composition Gallery in Atlanta 2009, hence the curling, and some are new prints for this show & panel. The twine was left loose at the end because of the unfinished nature of this work. As long as the PCMS is active surrounding communities will remain on watch. We are exploring ways to archive the actions taken by this resistance to aid others in theirs.

At the beginning of June I was asked to take part in a @co_creatives summit panel on the Piñon Canyon Expansion Opposition. The Piñon project was my first project right out of art school so to see that it and the resistance that inspired it still has impact is so marvelous. From 2006-2011 I traveled from my new home, Atlanta to my childhood home in southeastern Colorado to photograph folks fighting against an army base expanding by 1/2 a million acres. These are the people that organized to resist and say loudly and clearly that their land was not for sale by advocating to their political leaders, engaging the media, participating in environmental and archeological studies, and collaborating with creatives. More coming on this because it’s still top of mind and relevant as we continue to see citizens advocate for their rights here and around the nation.
