Today is the Miss Universe Canada Finals. 🤍

More than anything, I hope this journey serves as a reminder that where you begin does not dictate where you are capable of going.

Your past does not define your possibilities, and the road you have already travelled does not determine how far you can still go. We are allowed to evolve, to begin again, to believe beyond what we once thought possible, and to continue becoming the person we know we are capable of being.

Every chapter of my journey has shaped the woman standing here today, but no single chapter was ever meant to define the whole story.

So today, as I step onto the Miss Universe Canada stage one final time, I do so with immense gratitude for every experience that brought me here, every person who believed in me along the way, and every version of myself that chose to keep believing.

And if there is one thing I hope someone carries with them from my journey, it is this:

Where you have been does not dictate where you are going. 🤍

Still reflecting on how far Rooted has travelled. 🇨🇦➡️🇮🇹

I’m incredibly grateful to share that I received a $2,000 Market Development Travel grant from the Ontario Arts Council to support my international festival presentation of Rooted at the Life Beyond Life Film Festival in Northern Italy!!

What began as my first short documentary, and a deeply personal labour of love, became an opportunity to represent Ontario filmmaking internationally, connect with artists and audiences from around the world, and experience the film’s message of grief, healing and renewal resonate across cultures.

This support helped make it possible for me to attend the festival in person, participate in its programming, build meaningful professional relationships and continue developing the international life of Rooted.

I’m deeply thankful to the Ontario Arts Council and the Government of Ontario for investing in artists and making opportunities like this more accessible. I’m also grateful to Rachel, my crew, my family, and every person who believed in this film and helped carry it beyond where I ever imagined it could go.

This experience was more than a screening, it was a reminder that intimate, honest stories can travel far and connect us in unexpected ways.

With gratitude,
Kayla 🤍

Life Beyond Life - I’d say ‘grateful’ is an understatement!!

What an honour it is to receive the Religion Today Award for Rooted. I am deeply thankful to Andrea Morghen for recognizing the spirit of the film so thoughtfully - Describing the film as “intimate and profoundly human,”

while addressing the “theme of mourning with extraordinary sensitivity and authenticity,”

…”as a story that turns pain into a journey of rebirth through the act of creating” !!

Most poetic review I’ve ever received. 🥲

And to Annunziato for curating a space where stories like this can truly breathe! It has been so special to be able to share this story with so many. This award represents not only a milestone, but serves as a reflection of the journey this little labour of love has taken me on.🥹

I’m still trying to process, but thank you to my crew for building this with me. To Rachel, for your honesty, openness, and beautiful soul (Italy loves you btw).

And to everyone who believed in this film from the beginning (and along the way), thank you for holding it with such care.

dont judge how delayed this has been.. but the time has finally come for all of y’all to witness this very near and dear film of mine. Yes, I did host a full blown premiere last year.. (shoulda been there). Yes, I will be releasing it on YouTube on the 19th (exactly one year later). and YES, i am hesitant because this film is my baby and I’m very protective of her. Rachel, thank you for allowing me to tell your remarkable story.
To those who have been anticipating this film, take your time. The intention behind this story has an internally heavy, nostalgic, resilient, coming of age effect so, start preparing now!
Lots of love, Kay. 🌱
