Our planet is now home to about 8.2 billion people.
Since 1978, an estimated 13–17 million babies have been born with the help of assisted reproductive technologies (ART) such as IVF and ICSI. [5][6] That means roughly *1–2 in every 1,000 people* alive today were conceived through ART.
Right now, around 1 million ART-conceived babies are born each year worldwide – about 0.3–0.5% of all births globally – and in some high‑income countries, 5–10% of all babies now arrive via ART. Every 35 seconds, somewhere in the world, another child is born after fertility treatment.
On a day that highlights population, equity and rights, these numbers are a reminder that safe, evidence‑based fertility care is not a luxury. It is a core part of reproductive health, and access to ART should not depend on where you live, how much you earn, or whether you had the misfortune to face cancer, genetic risk or other barriers to natural conception.
This World Population Day, let’s talk not only about how many people we have on the planet – but whether every person who needs fertility care can actually reach it.
