It’s been nearly five months since my diagnosis and initial surgery and that long since I’ve posted anything. Time has flown so fast! Reflecting recently on those early weeks I realised how very unwell I was (not to mention the shock, disbelief and frustration) - def not missing those days at all. This week I finally got the great news that my recovery has progressed well and I’m nearly out of the woods. Phew! Things are well and truly looking up!! Now the long road of more intense rehab begins. Week one of the new regime has begun…god it’s hard 🥴. Patience has never been my strong suit but baby steps !! Just grateful to be back on my feet, with more energy and doing more than just walking in slow repetitive circles . Winning already 🙌🏻. Thanks to my nearest and dearest and wonderful friends and neighbours for looking out for me through this entire process and keeping my spirits up when I needed it. You know who you all are! Much gratitude. I may currently be slower (so much slower 🤦🏽‍♀️) and drastically unfit right now but it’s all Onwards and upwards from here! Bring it on 🙌🏻🙏🤗🫀 by @kazwatson

Strap yourselves in folks as the Shute Shield kicks off at 3.00pm today. But behind the scenes we got things started a little earlier on Thursday night with the official portrait session for the all new 2020 commentary team!

This season sees the return of Shute Shield favourite Tony Lewis who will be joined in the commentary box by @louransome_ , @seanny202 , @shan_parry and former Scotland international Dan Parks.

Extremely grateful and honoured to not only be named a finalist in 2020 professional #WISPAA category of the @auswomensport Sports Action Photography Awards again but also to have multiple images in the Top 15 for the second consecutive year, with all three of my submissions being nominated. As Australia emerges from COVID lockdown many of the major sporting codes have started to accelerate their planning for a return to competition, albeit in abbreviated form...or in the case of the NRL this past week, have already successfully relaunched their season. But almost universally, the focus has been on re-establishing the men’s competitions while many of the women’s seasons have been cancelled or postponed indefinitely with no indication yet when competitions will recommence. With many of the major sporting codes under enormous financial pressure due to the commercial impacts of the pandemic, it’s understandable that the focus is on those parts of the business that bring in the most revenue. And while most codes have seen solid growth in participation, engagement and revenue from women’s sport in recent years, it’s still fair to say for most codes it’s the men who bring in the most revenue....and where the focus to rebuild currently resides. Which begs the question - is the progress and momentum already made in women’s sport now facing the very real possibility of being slowed or halted...or at the least set back years?. And further to this, what are the possible long term impacts of COVID on women’s sport?
Globally, female athletes face far greater impacts in a post covid world - both financially and with regards to participation - than their male colleagues in similar sports.
The Guardians Madeleine Pape rightly argued that “vigilance is needed to ensure the women’s game (sport) is not relegated to the sidelines”. While Nancy Gillen of Inside The Game noted “The women’s sports industry needs to use this time to create stronger foundations and invest in its sustainability.” All valid points. One thing is for sure however - the surge in women’s sport over the last few years has produced some amazingly talented female athletes who should be celebrated and given the platforms to achieve greater heights in their chosen fields. It would be a great shame for that momentum to be lost now. Watch this space! And get out and support all the amazing female athletes!

I’ve been fortunate to photograph some incredible athletes and tournaments over the years and I can now add the 2019 GIO National Wheelchair Rugby Championship to that list. Previously known as Murderball - and for good reason as this sport is brutal - Wheelchair Rugby demands incredible skill, athleticism and endurance of its athletes.
The sport originated in Canada, invented by a group of quadriplegic athletes who wanted a contact sport where male and female players with reduced limb function could participate equally.
I can honestly say the energy was superb, particularly during the opening match between the GIO NSW Gladiators and the Qld Cyclones in front of a stadium packed with cheering local school children. There were plenty of hits, spills and fast breaks that kept everyone on the edge of their seats, while the DJ playlist reminded me of the great atmosphere of Sydney 7s.
Players included some of the best in the world including Aussie Ryley Batt (NSW), Kiwi Cameron Leslie (NZ), Aussie Andrew Edmondson (SA) and Canadian Zach Madell (QLD Cyclones) as well as exciting young talent such as 15yo Harry Clist (NSW). This year saw a stealthy Victoria Protect Thunder grab victory and the gold at the conclusion of the third and final day of competition on Sunday, while both QLD teams (QLD Suncorp Tornados and QLD Cyclones) took silver and bronze respectively. The NZ Wheel Blacks finished 4th, while the host team GIO NSW Gladiators ended their series in 5th with the AAMI South Australian Sharks closing out 6th place.

Warringah’s @scotty_bradley13 says “Welcome back HRC!” @henry_cr !
Henry Clunies-Ross made his much anticipated return to rugby - playing for @sufc1863 In 2nd grade against @warringahrats. HCR was sidelined after a serious leg injury that threatened to end the career of the former @nswwaratahs and @aussie7s s player and had him completing a portion of his rehab in a hyperbaric chamber.

The 3rd round of the NSW Shute Shield Women’s Rugby Sevens tournament kicked off at Manly Oval over the long weekend and there was plenty of red hot action on the field all day. Under blue skies and unusually mild winter weather, players from 20 teams across two divisions battled it out with @rebelettes_7s Souths2 team snatching top honours in Div 2 over @sufc1863 Academy side, while in Div 1 , @sufc_lionesses took line honours in their final round clash against @rebelettes_7s .
