Alter Ego Roll Call.

I’m Kristen Bartiss — underdog athlete, ruthless competitor, and trail runner out of Central Texas. I’ve been with Alter Ego for 6 months, and competing has been the constant thread through every season of my life.

I race for the challenge. For the moments when quitting feels easier, when the heart rate is high, the legs are cooked, and mental toughness is the only thing left. Trails, obstacles, long miles, if it demands grit, I’m in.

Competition has shaped me, tested me, and brought me back stronger than I ever expected. I don’t show up just to finish — I show up to compete.

Throw back to when I had a clean bill of health and Ruthless earned a spot on the fitness map. Felt like so long ago but the memories and friendships last forever. Competing has been my main outlet my entire life, a coping mechanism for stress, anger, frustration, sadness, happiness, excitement, passion, the list goes on. Over the last 10 years I have been blessed with the ability to pursue my passion and dreams of competing at a high level. The countless hours of training and sacrifice don’t come close to the various benefits, amazing memories and unbelievable people that I have met along the way. The endless support, love and motivation that I have received can’t be summed up into words.

Last weekend I had the opportunity to compete in my first Spartan race in over 3 years. Ironically it was my last race prior to my heart issue blowing up, and the first one back since I have been cleared. If you were to ask me 3 years ago if competing was in my future, I would have said no. Not because I didn’t believe I could but because all the doctors told me so. But when times were rough and the future looked gloomy and unpromising, my faith held strong. It was my rock, my foundation, my hope. And just like it has been promised time and time again, He delivered.

Although I’m still far from 100% physically, I can honestly say that I am blessed and happy. Blessed to be able to wake up to breathe another breath, live another day, and say another prayer. Don’t ever give up on your heart, I promise you it’s stronger than you think ❤️‍🩹

If I learned one thing from Hyrox Houston, it would be to trust your heart. Going into it I had no expectation of how it would go, how my body would feel, how or if my heart would handle it. I had no clue what time to expect or what would be my best and worst obstacle. To be honest I had no idea if I was even guaranteed to finish the race.

But one thing I was 100% sure of was my mental toughness. My desire to compete, my stubbornness to quit, the strength of my squad and the power of trusting in God. Obstacle 3 came and went and I was ready to turn in the towel. But I looked down at my arm and saw Joshua 1:9 and just one more rep.

I couldn’t tell you the rest of the race or what I said or did, it’s all such a blur. But I do remember the feeling of dropping the 100th wall ball, crossing the finish line, and hearing the crowd scream for everybody out there. In that moment, the black out, the chest pain, the racing heart rate didn’t matter. Hyrox Houston is just two weeks away and time is flying by! I am excited to see what limits I can push my body and mind to.
