Here's a voice that deserves to be heard both far and wide.

Out on the shelves in September, Kate Ryan's new book comes with a foreword by Darina Allen, showing the pedigree of this award-winning champion of Irish food and drink.

As a freelance food writer and journalist, Bristolian Kate has clearly kissed the Blarney stone as she can just as easily be found on a festival stage as she is in front of her keyboard. Closest to home and, I suspect, her heart, is 'Cork-On-A-Fork', a festival that celebrates Cork’s vibrant food scene.

Bloody good luck with all of the above, Kate!

In a happy fusion of cultural celebrations, my second year of the fire horse began with an auspicious, cardamom scented day of Scandliciousness!

It's always a pleasure to spend time with Helen Underwood at White Cottage Bakery and today was no exception.

Riding high on spice, it was time to get knotted as well as celebrate with snow-topped Semlor - aptly made (and eaten!) on Shrove Tuesday.��

With Danish sigteboller (salt-topped, 'sifted' rye buns) and Swedish knäckebröd to balance out the sweetness, we all left Helen's kitchen on cardamom cloud nine!�

The moustaches and glasses of Movembering gone by. Who knows what will appear this year but the message is the same - Men are dying too young. Through words, action, kindness and perseverance, we can make a difference.

Raising funds, awareness and, hopefully, a few smiles (courtesy of a silly moustache) is the least that I can do.

In a year that saw the passing of my father, this feels both poignant and all the more pressing.

If you are able to make a donation via my MoSpace, I would be MOst grateful. Equally, if you can direct the men in your life to look after themselves and each other, that would be truly special. Informed and forewarned, early help and diagnosis is key.

Currantly in competition.

The annual race to see who can pick the the most currants from the bushes gathered at our fence is a relaxed affair and one that both we and our garden's birds seem to enjoy. Our views on picking couldn't be more different. Where the birds perceive a neon-signed, 'All You Can Eat' buffet, we're more measured - carefully plucking those that are just right for artful sprinkles to lift both granola and salad bowls with their bittersweet zing. My favourite kind of Pop-Tart!

Truth be told, both sides win so it's the best kind of race where everyone is happy.
