To say it was a beautiful week at KCAI Fiber is an understatement! @kimemquilts Natural Dye class had their first critique of the semester and their works transformed our gallery space into a realm of indigo, weld, osage, madder, and more! 🌀

Fiber’s first field trip of the semester was to see @kimemquilts incredible exhibition What Quilts Carry @leedyvoulkosartcenter 🌟 The exhibition brings together 27 alumni of Kim’s course Quilts: More than the Sum of Their Parts and reflects the ongoing relationship between Kim’s experience teaching and her studio practice.

Since 1999, a graduating @kcaifiber student has been commissioned each year to create a ceremonial sash for the Nerman Family President to wear at Commencement, a tradition bringing together artistic expression and institutional legacy.

This year, Sarah McMurry (‘26 Fiber) | @sarahmcmurryy presented Dr. Peggy Shannon with a ceremonial sash emphasizing natural materials. Sarah’s recent practice centers on the rich colors and pigments of natural dyes, exploring their connections to both global histories and personal lineage. Using variations of mordant painting, she creates intricate patterns that retain the visible touch and hand of the artist.

After Commencement, each sash becomes part of the Kansas City Art Institute’s permanent collection. Previous years’ sashes are worn by senior faculty during graduation ceremonies, continuing the celebration of student creativity across decades.

We can’t wait to celebrate with the Class of 2026 this weekend!

The KCAI campus, the Emily & Todd Voth Artspace and the KCAI Gallery will be open this weekend for the 2026 KCAI Spring 2026 End of Semester Exhibition + Sale. Experience and purchase one-of-a-kind art made by KCAI students across campus. All proceeds benefit individual student artists and designers.

KCAI, the Artspace, and KCAI Gallery also serve as primary destinations for Arterie Fest 2026, a new daylong festival in the heart of Kansas City’s Art Museums & Cultural District. On Saturday, May 9 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., visitors across the region are invited to spend the day exploring events and activities at KCAI, the Artspace, KCAI Gallery, Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, and The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, all connected by The Arterie, a walkable pathway originating from new KC Streetcar line to the Art Museums & Cultural District stop at 45th and Main Streets and linking these cultural destinations.
