“Luminescence” has been awarded Best Student Film at the ARFF Amsterdam International Film Festival and has also been officially selected for the Lift-Off Paris Film Festival!

The film explores the imprint of transgenerational trauma, drawing from the performers’ individual background stories and physical research into how inherited experiences can manifest in the body, both socially and in solitude.

Anaïse van Caekenberghe @anaisvancaekenberghe is a KC Direction associate artist, freelance dancer and choreographer, formerly with La Horde Ballet de Marseille, and a graduate of Fontys Academy of the Arts.
“I am a dancer and performer unafraid to blur the line between passion and obsession.
I approach performance as a game between resistance and surrender, an ongoing exchange that expands the body’s possibilities and opens new ways of exploration. From this vision emerged my practice, fluid form / whispering vessels. The core of my practice is a deep-rooted love for movement and an ever-active curiosity. I need to keep the fire burning.
My identity has been shaped by many different people and works around me. Looking back, I feel my growth has come from the combination of my willingness and all these encounters.”

Your dancing feels both deeply honest and free. What has been inspiring you lately? Where do your ideas and curiosity usually come from?
Lately, I’ve been inspired by trying to understand why I dance in the first place. For a long time I focused on becoming the best version of myself, but recently my curiosity has shifted toward understanding what moving actually means for me.
I am inspired by dance as a way of existing, communicating, and understanding myself in relation to others. My practice is built on the belief that awareness only exists in the present moment. Movement happens through listening, instinct, and relation, until awareness becomes so soft that instinct replaces control. The body becomes intelligent on its own.
I want to reduce movement to something simple yet unquestionable: the essence of presence itself.
Dance, to me, is the urgency to exist truthfully. Movement functions as language : raw, immediate, and unresolved. I see the body as an ever-changing vessel shaped by resistance, devotion, memory, and instinct. It needs to feel dangerous and alive.
Beyond dance itself, I’m incredibly lucky to be surrounded by friends and colleagues who challenge me to stay wild and free. Seeing the work they create reminds me why I love this profession and motivates me to keep searching for my own path. by @kcdirection

Lino Eckenstein is a KC Direction associate artist, dancer and choreographer, formerly with Staatstheater Kassel and a graduate of Fontys Academy of the Arts. He is the creator of CRUELBEHAVIOR Projects. and an artist in residence at Tanzhaus Basel. As a film director, he created the double award-winning collection of seven films The Dust of My Concrete Child.
We got the chance to talk with him about his journey of making, visions, building, and collaborating.

Journey into Making
You’ve worked across performance, choreography, and directing. Could you briefly share your path and what led you from dancing into creating your own work?
- I have always had the urge to create and I knew that I wanted to have an impact. With CRUELBEHAVIOR Projects. I want to give a platform to topics that might be uncomfortable or triggering. To be heard, to be loud and to be unapologetic. I am inspired by people and the human emotion and journey. When I create it doesn’t come out of an interest but a need.

Voice & Urgency
Your work emphasizes giving space to voices that might feel uncomfortable or unspoken. Has that need to express always been present for you?
- There was always this sense to put the unspoken on stage or film. What shaped me and supported me in this approach was the moment I met Ana Paula and her pure and raw approach to expression - she is unfiltered and free to be vulnerable - she shares her pain, joy and frustration and gives voice to the unspoken.

Film & Translation of Dance
What happens to choreography when it moves from stage to screen. What is gained, and what is lost?
- Film is a beautiful way to get into the world of choreography and making - if you are creative you can make ideas happen that would cost you an unbelieveable budget on stage - you can play with magic! Also if you prepare it properly you can shoot and turn your ideas into reality very effectfully and you will always find dancers that are up to one or a couple of shooting days. And once is made you have it conserved and have the possibility to show it to wide audience all around the planet which is beautiful - it makes the touring of your work accessible. taken in Vienna, Austria by @kcdirection

Even paradise requires death

In 2022 I had the privilege of meeting Denise, the director of Hospice De Vier Vogels.
During my first year at Codarts, my project was selected for production through the Incubator program. I created Lighthouse, a documentary about a hospice in Rotterdam. Before moving to the Netherlands, I had already volunteered in hospices.
I interviewed Denise with my colleagues. For some of them, it was hard to hold back their tears. For me, a hospice has always been one of the greatest sources of light and life. Where else is there such a concentration of life as in a place where you know it will soon come to an end? Where else is there so much wisdom, courage, vulnerability, honesty and strength? You feel alive and at the same time between worlds. Death is the only thing you are sure about, and even paradise requires death.
Denise showed us around the hospice and shared its history and her own. The candle box symbolizes the 4 elements and the hospice’s values: Care, Coziness, Tranquility and Wisdom.Each candle burns until the life it represents comes to an end. Walking through the garden, birds kept singing around us. Sometimes angels take unexpected forms.
After our interview, she invited me to become a volunteer.
Denise shared that losing her son to suicide brought her to create the hospice. While making Lighthouse, she invited me to the premiere of Mijn Grote Broer, a heartbreaking film about her son, the attempts to come back to life after, it leaves you with hope while feels as if a blade is cutting through your heart and showing how grief can blossom into care for others.
Lighthouse premiered at Bird in Rotterdam. What mattered most was how deeply it touched people. The film still introduces the hospice on its website.
Last year the hospice closed because funding could no longer cover professional care. Despite enormous efforts, it could not continue. I truly wish people would help each other more. It’s so important for people to have this opportunity to spend the last stage of life with support and care.

Ekaterina’s practice approaches improvisation as a form of physical research, exploring mobility, joint articulation and the body’s physical range, alongside perception, imagery and shifting levels of focus. Through her Elevator Method and 8 Levels of Focus, dancers move between physical challenge, awareness and creative instinct, opening new pathways into movement and improvisation.
