Growing up, I wondered how my mom remembered Pearl Harbor Day and mentioned it almost every year.

After September 11, 2001, l understood. The date arose from my generalized memory of a life season to something forever distinct.

I remember where I was when we heard the news on that pleasant weather day in California.

I remember church services filled to capacity the following Sunday, and I wondered whether this was the beginning of a spiritual awakening or just a passing moment of urgency.

I looked up at the sky and contemplated commercial air travel under a nationwide ground stop.

I wondered what sort of person kills 3,000 random civilians who started the morning kissing their families goodbye and commuting to work in Lower Manhattan.

Today I unboxed Pumpkin’s urn and placed it under the cherry 🍒 tree where she enjoyed lounging on the hottest days.

Eight years she shouldered past three other dogs 🐶 to greet me, bouncing up and down until we could exchange gentle hugs and conversation for ecstatic doodle kisses.

We wish it could have been longer and look forward to reuniting beyond the bridge.
