Looking for a place to learn, train, and build confidence as a firearm owner?

KCR Firearms, Ammo & Training and The Range House are built around a simple idea: responsible ownership grows through knowledge, skill, and consistent practice.

That means:

• Learning safe firearm handling and storage
• Building skill through structured training
• Practicing in a responsible outdoor range environment
• Asking questions before making equipment or training decisions

The Range House is KCR’s private outdoor shooting range in the Myakka City/Manatee County area. Whether you’re new to firearms or continuing your training, the goal is the same: become safer, more capable, and more confident.

What part of your training or firearm-ownership journey are you working on right now?

Dry fire is practicing your trigger press without live ammunition: and it’s one of the simplest ways to improve trigger control, sight alignment, and accuracy at home.

Before you begin:

1) Choose a dedicated practice area with a safe direction and an appropriate backstop.

2) Remove all live ammunition and loaded magazines from the room.

3) Unload the firearm completely. Lock the action open if possible, then visually and physically inspect the chamber and magazine well. Follow your firearm’s manual.

4) Keep your finger indexed until your sights are on the target and you’re ready to practice the press.

Try this simple drill:

Complete 5 slow, deliberate trigger presses. Keep the sights aligned and watch for movement as the trigger breaks. If the sights move, slow down and focus on a smooth press straight to the rear.

When finished, stop handling the firearm before bringing ammunition back into the area. Also, check your owner’s manual: some firearms should not be dry-fired without approved snap caps or another training aid.

Safe practice comes first. Consistent, quality repetitions build skill and confidence.

How often do you dry fire? Let us know below.

Which sighting system fits your goals: a red dot or traditional iron sights?

Both can be effective. The right choice depends on your firearm, training, and how you plan to use it.

RED DOT SIGHTS
A red dot projects an aiming point onto a lens, allowing you to focus on the target while keeping the dot in view.

They can be a great option for range use, competition, and shooters who want a clear target-focused sight picture. They do require practice, battery awareness, regular maintenance, and an optic-compatible holster for concealed carry.

IRON SIGHTS
Iron sights use a front sight and rear sight that must be aligned with the target. They are simple, durable, and don’t require batteries. They also build the fundamentals every shooter should understand.

For concealed carry, consider overall size, holster fit, presentation, and how consistently you can use the system under stress. For range and competition, a red dot may offer advantages: but only if you train with it.

The best sight is the one you can use safely, confidently, and consistently. KCR’s team can help match an optic or sight setup to your firearm and goals.

Which do you prefer, and why? Let us know below.

Confidence starts with consistent safety habits.

The four universal rules of firearm safety apply every time you handle a firearm: at home, on the range, and during training.

1. Treat every firearm as if it is loaded.
Why it matters: This mindset encourages careful handling and prevents assumptions from creating risk.

2. Never point a firearm at anything you are not willing to destroy.
Why it matters: Muzzle direction is always under your control. Keep it pointed in a safe direction.

3. Keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to fire.
Why it matters: Keep your trigger finger indexed along the frame until your sights are on target and you have made the decision to shoot.

4. Be sure of your target and what is behind it.
Why it matters: A projectile can travel beyond your intended target. Know your full backdrop before firing.

Make these rules automatic through repetition and practice. Safe habits build knowledge, skill, and confidence.

Which rule do you think is most often overlooked? Share your thoughts below, and save this post as a quick reminder.

Choosing your first handgun? Start with the one that fits you: not the one someone else prefers.

Revolver:
A revolver is often straightforward to understand, with fewer controls and a simple operating system. Tradeoffs can include lower capacity, slower reloads, and a heavier trigger on many models.

Semi-automatic handgun:
A semi-automatic typically offers greater capacity and faster reloads with practice. It may also involve more controls and requires learning how to operate the slide, magazine, and safety system correctly.

Reliability matters, but both types can be reliable when properly maintained and used with the right ammunition. The best choice also depends on:

• How comfortably you can reach the controls
• Recoil and trigger feel
• Grip size and fit
• Your ability to safely operate the handgun
• Your willingness to train and practice
• Secure storage at home

The most important step? Handle and try both with a qualified instructor before you buy. A handgun that fits your hand and feels manageable is one you’ll be more likely to practice with confidently.

There is no universal “best” first handgun; only the best-informed decision for you.

What did you choose for your first handgun, or what questions do you have? #KCRFirearms by @kcrfirearms

🚨 FLORIDA FIREARM LAW UPDATE: AGES 18–20 🚨

We’ve been getting questions about the recent change affecting 18, 19, and 20-year-olds in Florida, so here’s the simple breakdown:

As of the recent Florida court ruling:

✅ AGE 18–20: May lawfully possess a handgun, provided they are otherwise legally eligible to possess firearms.

✅ FLORIDA CWFL: Qualified adults ages 18–20 may now apply for a Florida Concealed Weapon or Firearm License.

✅ CONCEALED CARRY: Once approved for a Florida CWFL, an otherwise eligible 18–20-year-old may legally carry a concealed handgun in accordance with Florida law.

✅ VEHICLE: Florida law also allows lawful possession of a handgun in a vehicle under applicable vehicle-carry provisions.

❌ BUYING A HANDGUN FROM AN FFL: Still NO.

Federal law still generally requires a person to be 21 or older for an FFL to sell or transfer a handgun to them.

❌ HANDGUN AMMUNITION FROM AN FFL: Federal law also generally prohibits an FFL from selling handgun ammunition to someone under 21.

So how can someone under 21 legally possess a handgun?

There are lawful ways a person may come into possession of a handgun without purchasing it from an FFL, including certain bona fide gifts or other lawful transfers. However, the specific transfer must comply with both federal and Florida law. A “gift” cannot simply be used to get around the law or disguise a purchase for someone else.

📌 KCR FIREARMS POLICY

KCR Firearms will continue to require customers to be 21+ for handgun sales and FFL handgun transfers unless and until the applicable federal law changes.

BOTTOM LINE:

An otherwise eligible 18–20-year-old in Florida can now obtain a Florida CWFL and, once licensed, legally carry a concealed handgun subject to the same applicable restrictions on where and how firearms may be carried.

That DOES NOT mean an FFL can sell them the handgun.

Possession. Purchase. Transfer. Carry.

They’re four different legal questions — and that distinction matters.
