I saw this Steindachner's Ebony Tarantula (Aphonopelma steindachneri) on my walk this morning. He was probably five inches across. It's breeding season for them, and judging by how spindly this guy was, I'm pretty sure it was a male heading out to look for love. I hope he steers clear of the many tarantula hawks around.

It was an eventful day as I saw a relatively small red diamond rattlesnake right off the trail too today. Regrettably I didn't get a pic because it was on a narrow trail on a very steep slope, and i wanted to get away from it.

Two species on one narrow leafed milkweed. The wasp with the black antennae is a Thisbe's Tarantula Hawk wasp and the one with the orange antennae is a Milde's Tarantula Hawk wasp. taken in Sycamore Canyon Park by @kdrip809

There were two species of Tarantula Hawk wasps on this narrow leafed milkweed. They love milkweed, and one of the reasons they do is because it gets them drunk. Milkweed nectar has a very high sugar content and it ferments in their gut and turns to alcohol. They fly super erratically most of the time, and i think it's because they are under the influence.

Behind the stem are a couple of large milkweed bugs. I got to watch a clutch of them go through their nymphal stages on this bush over several days. taken in Sycamore Canyon Park by @kdrip809

This red diamond rattlesnake (Crotalus ruber) was courteous enough to get off the trail where it was basking in the morning sun. (Ok MAYBE it wasn't courtesy. I tapped a rock near me with my hiking pole, and I think it felt the vibration.) Not one rattle from this guy. He was very chill. taken in Sycamore Canyon Park by @kdrip809

Yesterday I got to watch this egret majestically fly into the park. He landed on this boulder, did a very short egret hunting dance, snatched this lizard from the crevice between the boulders, and flew away. He got his food to-go. I always feel lucky when I get to witness natural feeding behavior. taken in Sycamore Canyon Park by @kdrip809

I got to see @realaimeemann sing my favorite song in the world, Invisible Ink, for the first time ever. I've been to so many of her concerts and never heard it live before. An amazing highlight of our little vacation in Del Mar. taken in The Sound by @kdrip809
