Artist book with Distanz Verlag and the talented Anna K.E. @ke.anna @distanzverlag 🩰 ♥️ 🐕 With @kestner_gesellschaft and @kunstmuseen_krefeld Pliéing deep into this line of philosophical thought with all the physical control found in the poker-faced art of ballet, K.E. brings her own temporary engravings to Kestner Gesellschaft for her solo exhibition, Dolorem Ipsum in 2024. The delirious self-restraint of the dancer’s body offers an image of total effortlessness, unfettered discharges of form, and exhilarating freedom. This is hardly the case. Poise and cursive flow betray the ascetic scores of muscular concentration demanded of the dancer to master extensions, which remain grounded and loyal to careful discipline. To portray weightlessness, one must bicker with core stability and the excruciating efforts of holding, h o l d i n g, uncompromising delineations. Recreating lines in a knowing gesture of this tension, K.E. installs wooden ballet barres in the gallery, filled with creamy marzipan paste that ballerinas certainly wouldn’t eat; control’s every version is a necessary principle in dance. Boundless port de bras and chassés built off the back of quotidian restriction, regulations, and obedience. As she understands it, the fluent release of the form disguises the biting backbone that underpins it, but the greater the precision, the greater the glory. K.E. is hardly tongue-tied in her aesthetic knowledge; she trained vigorously as a neoclassical ballerina with Vakhtang Chabukiani Ballet in Tbilisi, tearing her ligaments year in and year out, over and over, and inasmuch, the spectator can no longer assume that there is a lie, conspiracy, behind the surface of the work. Critiquing is a new recurring series of public critiques at The Gallery, centered on the simple act of looking, experiencing and talking about art. Beginning with a shared encounter with a work of art, we gather to reflect on what we have seen. Starting with the artists and then opening to the group, the conversation becomes an attempt to translate experience into language, testing perceptions, disagreements, and intuitions in real time. Unlike writing, which often arrives after reflection and revision, speaking remains closer to the immediacy of experience. Artist Portrait: Anna K.E.⁠⁠We are thrilled about Anna K.E.'s cover of the current September/October issue!⁠⁠Anna K.E., born in Tbilisi, Georgia, in 1986, lives and works in Queens, New York and is represented by the Berlin-based Galerie Barbara Thumm. After training classical ballet at Jakhtang Jabukiani ballet school Tbilisi, Anna K. E. studied art at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart 2002 and the Art Academy in Düsseldorf from 2004 to 2010. Anna K.E.’s practice investigates the body as an agent and receptor in a technologically and physically mediated landscape; and the absurd nature of the creative act. Working across drawing, sculpture, performance, sound and photography, K.E. mines the tension and irony of the body in space, as well of social relationships and transactions. Implying sysyphian cycles under the light of transgression and poetic breakthroughs; her work tends to fragmentalize notions and ideas that are arousing the viewer to realise the architeture of mind as an act of ongoing sequential experience. She represented Georgia at the 58th Venice Biennale in 2019, curated by Margot Norton. Past solo exhibitions include presentations at Kestner Gesellschaft Hannover, Germany (2024); National Georgian Museum, Tbilisi, Georgia (2022); Georgian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale, Venice, Italy (2019); Sammlung Philara, Düsseldorf, Germany (2018); Queens Museum, Queens, NY, USA (2017-2018).
