HEAVENS BASEMENT: directed and devised by @iamb3nzo

This was just crazy. What an honour it was, IT IS to be tasked and trusted to tell a lived experience and personal memories. I have a lecturer that loves to say “theatre is spiritual” I never really understood what that meant up until this moment. Allowing a person you’ve never met and probably never will to live within you, just for that moment in order to portray the full picture. Just WOW.

Heavens basement is “set during apartheid South Africa, Heaven’s Basement follows Sydwell Vuyisile Tshitshiba, an electrician turned criminal mastermind who leads an underground syndicate (The Angels of Retribution) forging stolen cheques to fund freedom fighters and secure Black survival. As Detective Vezimfihlo relentlessly hunts the group, Sydwell’s wife, Faniswa, is drawn into Vezimfihlo’s brutal conflict that blurs the lines between justice and revenge. Through stylised storytelling and physical ensemble work, the play explores resistance, brotherhood, love, and the moral complexities of using crime as a weapon against oppression.” taken in Wits Theatre by @ke.nalediii
