Red and black—combination by @ke_leteka

In a remote village governed by ritual and an unwavering devotion to punctuality, a funeral unfolds with meticulous precision under the watchful eye of the village chief. As arguments over time and tradition interrupt the ceremony, unsettling signs begin to emerge: the deceased appears unnervingly lifelike, strange occurrences ripple through the mourners, and whispers of forgotten folklore spread through the crowd. When the impossible finally happens and the dead man awakens on the brink of burial, the village is forced to confront the fragile boundary between life and death, certainty and mystery. Blending satire, magical realism, and philosophical reflection, “The Funeral” is a meditation on time, authority, memory, and the human need to impose order on the unknowable. In this new essay, “Reflections on the Lesotho Literary Tradition (and Other Gilded Cages)”, Kananelo Tšuene argues that while our archival texts remain invaluable, our dependence on them—and our reluctance to produce new writing about ourselves—places our cultural memory at risk.

Drawing on the folktale of Seetetelane, the essay asks an urgent question: What happens when we stop writing our own stories?

If we do not document our lives, traditions and ideas, someone else eventually will.

Read “The Scar” by Leteka Phillip Leteka—a poetic and unflinching reflection on a moment that refuses to remain in the past.

What begins as an ordinary afternoon in a Fayetteville parking lot unfolds into something far more enduring: an encounter shaped not only by fear, but by language. A single phrase—“sort of”—lingers, stretches, and settles into the body as a scar that cannot be seen, only felt.

Told with striking clarity and haunting restraint, The Scar explores how identity can be misread in an instant, and how such moments echo far beyond themselves—into memory, into history, into the quiet choreography of everyday life.

This is not only a story of what happened, but of what remains.
