Switch! is a playful reinterpretation of the traditional revolving door, functioning simultaneously as a stage, device, and threshold that invites performance and interaction. The door’s frame is divided into ten modular components that can be disassembled and repurposed as seating, while its circular stage will be reused for the next two Acts of BuildFest.

A magnetic sensor reads the revolving door’s angle a thousand times per second. As participants rotate the door, a projection responds in real time, with the speed and direction of movement shaping projected lava-lamp forms into a field of blooms. The act of passage becomes a performance.

Student Work Spotlight: AIANS Gold Award for Student Projects
Student Team: Gregory Destefano, Erwin Izeppi, and Rimervi Mendez Vasquez

The Jersey City Institute of Architecture [JCIA] explores using the concepts of permeability and porosity in order to blur the boundaries between education, structure, and community. Large concrete walls act as the building’s primary spatial elements, becoming filters of space, light, and circulation. Positioned in response to the site’s three exposed edges, these walls are spaced and rotated to create a dynamic sequence of spaces. The second and third floors are lifted above the ground, opening the first floor and creating a flow of circulation and strengthening the building’s connection to the surrounding community.

The JCIA is designed to engage both the local community and students. For the community, a market, auditorium, and exhibition space activate the building at ground level, while classrooms, studios, and making spaces support the students. Shared amenities, including a cafe, open green space, and central atrium, create opportunities for collective engagement between students, faculty, and the public.

Permeability and porosity can be found in the building itself as well with exposed structure and systems, making the processes of architecture visible and allowing the building to become a teaching instrument. This concept can also be found in the unique interchangeable facade system that uses student-designed panels, showcasing the academic community in the physical form while doubling as the building’s shade system. by @keanarch

For the fifth consecutive year, faculty and students from Michael Graves College participated in BuildFest @buildingfestival , the annual design-build festival at the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts.

Project Description:
Switch! is a playful reinterpretation of the traditional revolving door, functioning simultaneously as a stage, device, and threshold that invites a wide range of performances and interactions. The door’s frame is divided into ten modular components that can be disassembled and repurposed as seating. The frame sits on an 11-foot-diameter circular stage that will be reused for the next two Acts (BuildFest 2027 & 2028). A magnetic sensor attached to the revolving door’s shaft reads the angle of the door at a thousand times per second. During the activation, as participants rotate the door, the projection responds in real time, with the speed and direction of movement shaping the projected lava lamp shapes into a field of blooms. The projection transforms the act of passage into a performance.

Team Roster: Stephanie Sang Delgado @stepholope (faculty), Fabio Castellanos @fabio_andres (faculty), Galo Canizares @itsgalo (University of Kentucky), Henry Stankiewicz, Mateo Mesa, Rida Sajjad, Joelle Guay, Ruby Foligno, Martina Riad, Thomas Hoy ,Oudai Al-Shuaibi, Katherine Jaramillo

This year also marked the beginning of Assistant Professor Stephanie Sang Delgado’s three-year appointment as guest curator, alongside Neal Lucas Hitch. Their curatorial framework, Acts of Construction, launched with the 2026 theme, Staging. The theme, Staging, asked designers to explore staging as an embodied act: a process, a choreography of materials and a dance of labor coming together; it is temporal and architectural. taken in Bethel Woods Center for the Arts by @keanarch

AIAS Grassroots 2026!

It’s good to be back for AIAS’s annual conference in Washington D.C! We had an amazing time and had a great opportunity to grow as architects, and more importantly grow as people. We learned a lot from inspiring keynote speakers, and the architecture students all over who make it all possible.

Thank you @aiasorg , and thank you to everyone who put this all together. We’re grateful and looking forward to the next opportunity to learn!

Adjunct Professor Bradley Isnard’s exhibition at Citigroup is open until May 23rd, check it out! The exhibition, Jessor, is about Herman Jessor and the limited-equity cooperative living movement in New York City, 1925-1974.

A multimedia exhibition at Citigroup curated by photographer Zara Pfeifer, designer Brad Isnard, and journalist Daniel Jonas Roche features original photographs, drawings, and biographical research about Herman Jessor, the most prolific affordable housing architect in New York City history.

WHAT: Set against the backdrop of New York City’s current housing crisis and renewed conversations about the need for government-subsidized social housing, JESSOR: opens to the public March 19 and will be accompanied by lectures, walks, and film screenings through May 23. Exhibition photography, content, and more details about programming are forthcoming.

This is the second exhibition in an ongoing research and design project focused on Herman Jessor by this curatorial team. Mounted at Citigroup, JESSOR: debuts new photographs, research, and architectural drawings based on never-before-displayed materials from Jessor’s office. The exhibition and broadsheet is designed by Geoff Han and Katie Ladd contributed significant research and curatorial support.

The exhibition will include photographs of interiors and exteriors by Pfeifer taken since 2023 at housing cooperatives in the Bronx, Manhattan, Queens, and Brooklyn that record present-day life in Jessor’s buildings. A biography by Roche paints a portrait of Jessor and his milieu, informed by historical records, interviews with the late architect’s friends and relatives, and housing cooperative residents. Architectural drawings and theoretical text by Isnard, developed from extensive field and archival research, speak to Jessor’s design methodologies.
