MY QUARTET ALBUM IS OUT!!!

It feels like an age ago (2 years) since we recorded this music in Tokyo, but the really nice thing is that I’m honestly just as, if not more, into all these songs and performances as I was then.

Thank you to @benbovrilharrison for being an endless source of creativity and joy, in music and in life. Thank you to @martyhbass for all your care, love and support ever since we met. Thank you to @shun_ishiwaka for your warmth and humour in welcoming me into a small part of your amazing musical world.

On the 2nd day of #mondmas my true love gave to me… a @keendude on the keys!

Mr James Bowers. The newest member of mondos. A bad man! Much valued musical talent and forever a humorous hang. We’re grateful to share the stage with him. My Quartet Album by James Bowers is out now!

James Bowers is a sought-after pianist, composer, and collaborator based in Naarm/Melbourne. Known for his exciting improvisational style and musical empathy, he seamlessly traverses diverse genres, informed by but not bound by stylistic norms. James has toured Europe, the US, and Japan, performing at esteemed venues like Blue Note Tokyo’s Cotton Club. His debut, My Trio Album, received critical acclaim, leading to features at the Melbourne International Jazz Festival and collaborations with artists like MELRAW and Ben Harrison. Beyond performance, James is studying to become a music therapist, exploring music’s power to help people understand and process themselves better.

Hello everyone.

Today is the day realistically none of you have been waiting for, but hopefully some of you will be mildly chuffed to have arrived at. My second single “Shanty” is out.

It’s a lil bit more serious, a lil bit more moody than the first single, and I’ve tried to honour that with a very nice but very very serious photograph taken by the wonderful @nick_mckk

This song was written as part of a suite that COVID meant was never really performed for my parents, so I always like to dedicate this song to them. Thanks so much to Ben, Marty and Shun for your wonderful playing across all this album. It’s easy (ha, sort of lol) to record music when you get to do so with the musicians that you heard in your head while writing it.

Go stream it, head to bandcamp to preorder the album, share it, do whatever. I couldn’t put the audio on this post because it’s not on the insta algo yet, so enjoy an equally meaningful and moving composition that I have chosen in lieu of this.

The second single ‘Shanty’ from the upcoming album ‘My Quartet Album’ by James Bowers is out this Friday!

James Bowers is a Naarm/Melbourne-based pianist. ‘My Quartet Album’ is an expansive and deeply personal new recording that follows his celebrated debut, My Trio Album. Reuniting with long-time collaborators Marty Holoubek (bass) and Shun Ishiwaka (drums), and now joined by trumpeter Ben Harrison, this release expands both the sonic palette and emotional range of Bowers’ music. The result is a fearless, joyfully chaotic, and unexpectedly moving work from one of Australia’s most compelling musical voices.
