Some movies you watch. Others feel like you’ve traveled somewhere and, somehow, found a piece of yourself waiting there. ✨

If I Go Will They Miss Me felt like that for me; a tender journey into a life that feels familiar in ways you can’t always explain. Like being welcomed into a world you already know because you’ve lived some version of it, felt its questions, its beauty, its wonder.

It reminded me that sometimes the most beautiful stories are the ones that let us see ourselves clearly.

📣 TEACHING ARTIST ANNOUNCEMENT! 📣

Dr. Keeonna Harris is a Black woman, storyteller, abolitionist scholar, mother, and life coach. Keeonna was born and raised in Watts, and other parts of South-Central Los Angeles, California. In her writing, Keeonna explores conceptions of motherhood, familial relationships, and wellbeing for Black women in the United States—focusing on the health disparities, relationships, and radical organizing for women connected to systems of mass incarceration.

She will be joining Write 25 to teach a workshop on Turning Words into Magic.

Many of us get stuck, searching for that grandiose word rather than writing words that we use every day and that reflect our lives. Sometimes, the magic of the word is in the mundane. This workshop is for writers who are feeling discouraged and unable to find the perfect word/and or words to convey the nuance and depth that we want our readers to feel. Participants will leave this intensive with a set of practical strategies on choosing a word that “fits” the ongoing themes of their work.

The last two weeks have been something else, smh! 😮‍💨 I wasn’t feeling it this day, but I’m so glad I got my butt up and made it to The Wicked Ball. A TIME was had! 🔥✨

Big shoutout to Julian for the invite and for all the incredible work you continue to do for the community. I believe in giving people their flowers while they’re here. 🌹 I’m so proud of you and the way you show up through advocacy and representation in these Seattle streets.

And shoutout to the Seattle City Council for recognizing Julian and others for their dedication and proclaiming August 4th as Seattle & Tacoma Kiki Ballroom Community Day! 🏳️‍🌈✨

You became “Mama” before you had the chance to fully discover who YOU wanted to be, that doesn’t mean your dreams expired.

To every young Black Mama: your story isn’t over. The baby on your hip isn’t holding you back; they’re watching you build a life they’ll be proud of.
Go back to school. Start the business. Apply for the job. Create the content. Chase the dream.
Motherhood changed your path, but it didn’t cancel your purpose.

Listen... I wanted to go to Hillman College SO BAD! 😂 Yes, I know it wasn’t a real school, but in my mind I was already picking out my dorm. 🤣 If you know, you know.

That show made me believe there was a whole world of possibilities waiting for me.

Then I got pregnant with my son at 15 and thought, “Welp... that’s it for ya girl.” 🥴 I figured my dreams had packed up and moved out.

But life has a funny way of teaching you that some dreams aren’t denied—they’re just deferred.

Because years later, the little girl dreaming about Hillman became Dr. Harris. 🎓✨
