Here is a bit more more a full video of the making of the wine racks from back in the early summer.

The making of my signature loop shelves in solid oak. The loops are made with large dovetails and the shelves are held in place with walnut wedges, a new concept for flat pack shelving.

The next stage in making the windows is to build and fit the window casements. These are built with wedged and scribed mortice and tenon joinery. In my shop the scribe is done with a router, as I don't have a tenoner at the moment but it works great with the right set up.

Building traditional window frames - showing some of the steps involved in making these window frames properly, using mortice and tenon joinery. Also the cutting of the trickle vents openings so that they are hidden in the rebate, so you don't see those ugly covers from the outside. Next is building the casements to fit inside these frames.

The first step for building windows is the material preparation. Here we have a load of accoya timber being cut in to lengths with the chainsaw and planed to dimension.

Accoya is an amazing product. It is taken from pine trees, which are grown specially for this purpose. They are cut down after around 25 years of growth and treated with acetic acid, temperature and pressure. This produces a highly stable, highly workable and extremely durable timber which is also completely sustainable.

Accoya can be left submerged in fresh water for 50 years before it even thinks about rotting. It doesn't move like oak does and is getting cheaper, while oak is getting more expensive every few months.

This lot was produced in New Zealand, but there is no reason why we can't produce it here. All joiners should be using this for painted exterior joinery. These windows will outlast uPVC windows while being more beautiful, sustainable and repaintable.

Something a little bit different! Making a Montessori desk for a little one. The idea is that the top of the desk can be raised as she grows up, while being fixed to the wall for safety, complete with a little bookshelf!

A change from furniture making back to some traditional joinery. Making the sub-cills for a load of windows I'll be making this next couple of months. I also enjoy this kind of work a lot and it definitely informs and influences the way I build and design furniture. I'll show the whole process of the window making here in the next two months, so stay tuned!
