Deferral isn’t rejection. From one deferred student to another you are more than enough for your dream university. It may not feel like it now, but you will make it to your dream school. Below are 5 helpful tips that you can use to turn your deferral into an acceptance.

1. Write a strong Letter of Continued Interest
Reaffirm your interest, explain why this school is still your top choice, and show how you’ll contribute to campus.

2. Send meaningful updates
New grades, leadership roles, awards, jobs, or community involvement. You want to show admissions your growth.

3. Sharpen your “why”
Clearly connect your goals, values, and passions to specific programs, resources, or opportunities at the school.

4. Add another recommender (if it helps)
Choose someone who can speak to your recent growth, work ethic, or leadership since applying.

5. Keep showing up for yourself
Stay focused, stay hopeful, and remember: this pause does not define your worth or your future.

Remember you are more than a college decision!

📌 Starting your HBCU journey this fall? Save this post. 🎓✨

What we wish we knew before stepping on campus:

1️⃣ Get involved, but don’t lose yourself — build your network without sacrificing who you are.

2️⃣ Be authentically you — college is where you discover yourself, so give yourself room to grow.

3️⃣ Rejection is redirection — what’s meant for you won’t miss you.

4️⃣ Embrace the HBCU experience — enjoy learning in a space where Black culture, excellence, and community are celebrated every day. 🖤
