The first steps you take may be the ones you’re most afraid to take, but they can be the ones that change you the most.

My experience at the Democracy Summit reminded me of just how much can happen when you’re willing to step outside of what’s familiar. From traveling to Washington, D.C. by myself to receiving the email that I had been selected for a scholarship opportunity to gain hands-on experience and further understand my “why” for journalism, this experience opened my eyes to opportunities I know I want to continue pursuing.

I’m learning that there is so much more to discover within my potential and the woman I know I am becoming. Being in rooms where I can learn, ask questions, gain knowledge, and be a light to others has reminded me that growth happens in more ways than just professionally. I’m growing in my confidence, my purpose, and my understanding of myself.

And one thing I’m especially grateful for is the people who have been by my side along the way. I’m learning that when you have the right people in your corner, that is one of the greatest gifts you can have.

This trip was more than just Washington, D.C. It was another step toward the woman, journalist, and storyteller I know I’m becoming. ❤️ taken in Washington DC by @keii.ra_

Before you ever say a word, people have already formed an impression. The way you carry yourself, treat others, and show up matters. Excellence is something you choose every single day.

I’m beyond grateful to the Thurgood Marshall College Fund for selecting me to attend the DEVCON Leadership Conference. Being given this opportunity was an incredible honor, but being recognized for the way I represented myself throughout the conference made the experience even more meaningful.

Because of TMCF, I had the privilege of representing my 1890, Savannah State University. While Savannah State may not always receive the recognition it deserves, I made it my mission to represent my university with professionalism, confidence, and excellence in every room I entered.

Thank you to Macy’s and the Thurgood Marshall College Fund for investing in me through a $2000 professional wardrobe sponsorship. It wasn’t just about the clothes—it was about preparing me to walk confidently into rooms that align with the future I’m working toward.

What makes this experience even more special is that it happened in Houston, Texas—a full-circle moment in my home state after being born in Dallas.

As a Mass Communications student with aspirations of becoming a news anchor, I haven’t even started my sophomore year yet, and God is already opening doors I once only dreamed about.

This conference may be over, but this is only the beginning.

Thank You, God, for every blessing, every connection, every lesson, and every opportunity. The best is yet to come.
