What a fantastic concert at Osaka Symphony hall to end the Japan 🇯🇵 tour !

Feeling so honoured and blessed to have my music performed by these incredible artists (@alexander_shelley and @nac.orch.cna )

Still processing the experience of touring with this amazing group of people, hearing my work played in these gorgeous, historic halls, and performed by such talented and generous people.

Being a mom is beautiful. Being a mom and a composer is complex. Slowly trying to figure out how to make space and room to start composing full time again. There is no simple or right solution, nor is there is there a huge amount of precedent in this field.

I have been very grateful to have worked with organizations that have made it possible for me to be both. Of course this should be the norm- making it possible for working new moms to accommodate these dualities, but we know it often is not. Thankful to @nac.orch.cna, @wpgsymphony among other ensembles for how they welcomed my daughter and family into my work life.

I’m 3rd generation Japanese Canadian. My grandfather’s family (Nishi) and grandmother’s family (Miyagawa) were both established and thriving in Mission BC. When the war started the Canadian government declared the Japanese Canadians as “security threats” and “enemy aliens” and they were either forcibly moved to internment camps or put to work as cheap labourers in Southern Alberta. The government seized their land, their homes, their animals, and most of their belongings. Some was sold for next to nothing, and some held for “safe-keeping”. Nothing was returned to them.

I have been thinking a lot more lately about this part of my family’s history and how it has affected how I identify, how my mother raised me, and in general the overall harm it has caused generations of Japanese Canadians and the community they had created.

I think I had compartmentalized these acts and my hurt and anger. I think many Canadians are not even aware of this history, or don’t understand the effect it has had for generations.

1. A picture of my mom as a school girl. She was born and raised on the southern Alberta sugar beet farm my family was moved to.

2. My grandfather and his family pre war.

3. My grandmother and her family being picked up in the back of a wagon by their new “host” farmer where they were brought to their new home- a chicken coop. by @keiko_devaux

It has been such a meaningful collaboration- composing this hour long piano and voice work, with electronics to the text of @racheliwaasa - with the insightful directing of David Bloom (and future images of S.D Holman).

Premiering this work at the @powellstfest was especially meaningful, to a roomful of 20+ of my Japanese Canadian family members.

Beyond being a very personal story about Rachel’s family history, it is also a story about the displaced, interned/enslaved Japanese Canadian families during the war. A very dark and shameful time of Canadian history.

Looking forward to this work’s continued life and hopefully it will evoke conversation and continue to educate audiences.

Thank you Rachel for your trust. Thank you David for your insights and looking forward to working more together.

Also thank you to @cmcbcmusic for our residency- it was helpful and needed time to bring this work together by @keiko_devaux

Hand writing all my scores means I accumulate a large amount of little pencil stubs. I have varying degrees of patience to how small I let them get ✏️✏️✏️

I am strangely attached to them. The amount of time it takes to wear down one pencil, and the time I spend with them- I strangely have a hard time letting them go by @keiko_devaux

Konzerttipp 🎶✨

🗓Sonntag, 5. Juli, 20h
📍Werner-Otto-Saal im Konzerthaus Berlin

This conceptual/structural sketch was found in the bottom corner of some paper that had fallen behind my harpsichord.. I just spent way too long trying to figure out which piece it was for. Maybe something I never composed (?) the contrast of energy and specificity yet total loose chaos has totally captivated me 🤔 by @keiko_devaux

Composing by hand larger scale works can be daunting but extremely satisfying. I always like looking at the whole work at the end.. I ran out of floor and wall room. Pictured here is 1/2 of the work… detailing out the electronics now. More details about the work to come soon 😌 by @keiko_devaux
