The Lake Date 🍫🤍✨

Picture this: Damian Reyes — black curls, lip ring, a whole reputation for not caring about anything — sitting on the floor outside a debate classroom for almost an hour. Just waiting. A thermos of hot chocolate cooling in his hands, a bag of sour gummy worms crinkling in his jacket, because Milo once mentioned, offhand, that they were the only ones worth eating. And Damian remembered. Damian always remembers.

When Milo finally walks out — ink on his hand, backpack slipping off his shoulder, mid-sentence about somebody’s rebuttal — Damian doesn’t say a word about how long he’s been sitting there. He just hands over the candy like it’s nothing, takes Milo’s bag onto his own shoulder, and starts walking like his heart isn’t doing something enormous.

He drives them back to the lake — their lake, the one where they first started to matter to each other — and pulls out a blanket he “definitely didn’t” pack with this exact moment in mind. And the hot chocolate? He made it criminally sweet. Milk instead of water, extra sugar, a mountain of marshmallows melting on top, because Milo likes everything too sweet and Damian wanted, for once, to get something right for him.

They sit at the edge of the dock trading the thermos back and forth, chocolate powder clinging to the bottom by the time they’re through. Milo winces every time he drinks it and takes another sip anyway, because Damian made it, and that makes it perfect. They lie back under a sky absolutely crowded with stars, tracing constellations with linked fingers, trading tiny pieces of themselves — a moon that used to follow car windows, a childhood belief that heaven started right past the stars, a mother who might be just right there, above.

It’s soft. It’s warm. It’s Damian pulling Milo under a shared blanket in the parking lot because neither of them is ready to go home yet. It’s Milo whispering “my boyfriend wants a second date” like he still can’t quite believe he gets to say it. It’s a boy who swore he’d never do this again, doing it anyway — for the one person who makes him want to notice things.

Expelled. Numb on purpose. Sent back to the mother who walked out on him six years ago and never once checked in.
