July and August with Ruthie

It feels like nothing is happening, but in reality so much is happening. My days are more full than ever but in completely new ways.

I am painting, but it's slow.
I am working, but it's slow.
I am teaching, but it's slow.

I am mostly making sure this little human is happy and loved. by @kelcmack

Thank you Laura Sallade and @sensusphilly for including Kelly-McKenna Gallery and paintings by @kelcmack in “Elsewhere Art Fair Defies Neutrality”, reflecting on the experience of encountering art throughout @elsewhere.fair at @helloyowie.

Writing about Kelcie Mack’s Still Life with Rocking Chair #3, Sallade describes Mack’s paintings as “an index of color and form,” and considers the intimate relationship between the work, its surroundings, and the viewer.

Kelcie Mack is a contemporary painter whose work centers on abstracted depictions of furniture, exploring the familiar relationships we form with objects and their makers. Through color, structure, negative space, and form, her paintings draw attention to craftsmanship while reconsidering the everyday objects that quietly shape our domestic lives.

We’re grateful to have been part of Elsewhere Art Fair’s inaugural Philadelphia edition and to see Kelcie’s work highlighted among the fair’s presentations.

I’m so excited to have contributed an essay to the June issue of @whitehotmagazine examining the inaugural edition of @elsewhere.fair at @helloyowie in Philadelphia.

My piece considers what happens when contemporary art is presented outside the familiar fair format and how a hotel setting can reshape the relationship between artwork, viewer, dealer, and space.

The essay features conversations with @blahblahgallery and as well as participating galleries including @pointblank.chi @stowaway_la @fleisherollman and @kellymckennagallery

It also highlights presentations by artists @kelcmack @resurrectstudio @alesssandra.lol @indianahoover @mollyemetz

Many thanks to @whitehotmagazine for the opportunity to reflect on a project that brought together so many thoughtful galleries, artists, and conversations under one roof.

Contemporary Shaker Rocking Chair
36x48
Oil on canvas

My Dad built this rocking chair during his time as the woodworker at Allaire State Park. We recently found an article where he talks about this project and some of his preliminary drawings as he planned the piece. I included images of the article and drawings here. So thankful to have these little insights into his process! He would have been 23 at the time.

He made his first Rocking chair in high school which was full Shaker model. This was his second rocking chair and when he spoke about it he always noted it was a more contemporary take on a Shaker rocking chair.

While this chair is one of my favorites to both look at and sit in, this is the first time I have painted it. There are so many slight curves on this chair making it difficult to capture. After many attempts at drawing it, I finally had a drawing I liked enough to move forward with a painting. The painting was equally as challenging but we made it through.

The joinery on this chair is really special so I will definitely be revisting it in the future for a detailed focused painting.
