This was Eli’s third trip to Upstate Art Weekend. Every day this kid has more to say and more he wants to do, and watching him grow from a tiny baby into this 2 year old has been the most incredible thing. “Inner Circle”, 26x20 in., soft pastels on toned paper, 2025.

The reference for this piece was created using photos of my arm and hand paired with seashells generated with Mirage AI, a very basic AI image generator app. I directed the app to create seashells with more feminine and open shapes, often including nouns and adjectives such as home, mother, safe, and shelter. Shelter in particular gave me the big open shells behind the hand, reminiscent of bivalves, but also resembling large bandshells with thick, curved edges. by @kelli__thompson

I made these two drawings in soft pastel earlier this year. They feel extremely personal and making them was a very emotional experience, as I was watching Eli change from this baby into a toddler.

This summer I downloaded an AI image generator and started asking it to show me things. Even when I got very specific in my requests, the application and I would often imagine extremely different images. I became most interested in how the AI rendered natural objects, such as seashells. I would often combine ideas and concepts in the forefront of my mind with direct requests like “pink univalve seashell”. The addition of these personal concepts, such as motherhood, feminine, and protection, would cause the program to make minor- and often surprisingly apt- changes in the imagery. The results of the AI generated seashells were never as any shell I’ve seen, that actually exists, but more an amalgamation of various parts of real organisms, in addition to some extra curves, bumps, and crevices. Sometimes strange tiny animals would appear standing next to the shells, as if the image was a snapshot of a real seashell on a beach, existing in its habitat with other native lifeforms.
These are four drawings I made from my experiments with the AI image generator, very much inspired by the drawings of Ernst Haeckel and his theory that over time, from life came a series of successively higher forms.
