studio b. turns TWO. 🥳

Someone once told me starting a business is like learning to fly a plane midair. Two years in, I can confirm.

Some days it’s nothing but smooth skies. Some days I’m reading the manual. Almost every day I wonder who let me have a plane.

Over the past two years, I’ve solved problems and met clients I didn’t know existed. I’ll learn something new every day and the business is better for it. Somewhere along the way, a dream became reality.

I’m proud of what this little studio has become—and very excited about where it’s headed.

Thank you to everyone who trusts in me, hires (and rehires!) me, refers me, works alongside me, or simply cheers studio b. on.

Here’s to year three. ✈️

For our #haddonavenue project in West Town, the challenge is a blank, underutilized wall opposite the kitchen that needs to fill the tall order of becoming a mudroom, pantry, and breakfast nook.

We’re exploring several configurations using white-box renderings, allowing us—and our clients—to focus on proportion, circulation, storage, and how each option would actually feel in the room, without the distraction of finishes and selections.

A simple way to test how much function we can get out of a space before moving into the next layer of design. Which option would you choose?

What caught our eye—

September brought dusty mauves and bruised plum,
powder blue made quieter with earthen brown.
The last aubergine flowers against grasses gone ochre.

Design is in the details.

For this Ukrainian Village bathroom, our client wants the tilework to pay homage to her 1920s building—and she shares our appreciation for a really detailed layout.

The client came to us with a limited quantity of reclaimed lavender tile she found at a St. Louis estate sale. We’re pairing it with hand-pressed English border tiles and trim. Tulips and lavender both have special meaning to our client so we are placing them at eye level, where they can be seen and enjoyed most, and are designing every other course around them.

Just a little behind the scenes at Oakley Boulevard.

Remember the Secret Garden? It kept growing. 🌿

A few weeks after developing our Secret Garden concept for the @networknextgen × @moeninc event, I was invited by @scottgroupstudio to design a rug for their Design Chicago competition!

I kept coming back to the garden. The layered, slightly overgrown garden that inspired the mood board became something a little more playful—wildflowers, bees, butterflies, and the feeling of children playing barefoot in the grass.

The inspiration also came close to home, pulling from @honeybs.chicago, the little pollinator garden we’ve been creating in our neighborhood, and the idea that a space can be beautiful, useful, imperfect, and full of life.

I wanted the rug to feel sophisticated enough to live anywhere, but whimsical enough that, if I’m lucky enough to win and bring the rug home, I’d put it in my daughter Lili’s room. 😉

It was a fun reminder that one creative idea doesn’t necessarily end when the project does. Sometimes it just becomes the beginning of the next one. 🐝🌼

A little look back at a very good night at THE MART. ✨

Last month, I was honored to be featured alongside such a talented group of women for Network Next Gen + MOEN’s first-time homebuyer event — an evening celebrating design, community, and the very personal process of turning a house into a home.

For the event, five designers were asked to develop a kitchen mood board. studio b.’s Secret Garden concept was inspired by layered materials, collected details, enduring patina, and the feeling of a home that becomes richer and more personal over time. It was so much fun seeing guests engage with the materials, talk design, and imagine what home could look like through their own lens.

Thank you to Network Next Gen + MOEN for bringing us together, and to everyone who spent the evening with us. 🤍

kinda chic (better late than never!) by @kellibessenaire

Dolly Parton truly meant something to me. She has been my idol since I can remember. Unapologetically joyful, generous, and unmistakably herself. She understood there was no virtue in making yourself smaller to be taken seriously.

The world feels a lot less colorful today. Thank you, Dolly, for showing me what it looks like to sparkle. by @kellibessenaire
