We can’t wait to see what’s been taking shape in studios, on stages, behind cameras, and in the edit—and to bring another wide-ranging collection of dance films to Los Angeles in January.

Duet with Film: A Dance Film Creation Course at the Colburn School

A dance film isn’t finished when the camera stops rolling.

In the final stages of Duet with Film, participants will explore editing and post-production—shaping captured movement through pacing, sequence, sound, and image—along with the collaborative production techniques that bring a film from individual ideas to a shared creative vision.

Working together as cast and crew, dancers, choreographers, filmmakers, and other creatives will gain hands-on experience throughout the filmmaking process, culminating in original work created during the six-week course and presented at a public screening and artist feedback panel on Oct. 22

Led by Kelly Hargraves, Director of Dance Camera West.

Six weeks. Two evenings a week. One original film.

Duet with Film: A Dance Film Creation Course at the Colburn School

How does the camera change the way we see a dancer? And what happens when the location becomes part of the choreography?

In this six-week course, participants will explore cinematography—using framing, perspective, movement, and the lens to shape how dance is experienced on screen—and site-specific filmmaking, discovering how architecture, landscape, and unexpected environments can become active elements in a dance film.

Led by Kelly Hargraves, Director of Dance Camera West, Duet with Film brings dancers, choreographers, filmmakers, and other creatives together to learn by making—developing and producing original work throughout the course.

Open to the public. Ages 18+

September 15–October 22, 2026

Tuesdays & Thursdays, 5:30–7:30pm
