Let's talk about body image...

I've always hated race photos. I'm terrible about putting to memory where the photographers will be and that means I can't prepare myself to strike a "flattering" pose. And of course, by "flattering," we usually mean "smaller."

So I would look at my race photos, and instead of seeing accomplishment, I saw my tummy, my rolls, my double chin. Instead of seeing focus, I saw struggle that I believed I wouldn't see if only my body were built "more like a runner."

These marathon photos hit different, y'all. Even though I still didn't always see the photographer, I was moved to see that I was smiling in almost every picture. Even the ones where I'm not radiating joy, I saw determination and focus rather than struggle. I saw beauty in my strength. I saw triumph. I saw loving the process. I saw the love and support of friends and strangers. I saw my body as capable rather than a liability.

I will cherish these photos almost as much as the experience itself.

And fuck the brain washing that teaches us that our bodies aren't amazing, strong, and beautiful just because they don't fit within a narrow standard. Fuck picking ourselves apart. We are amazing. We are strong. We are beautiful. Wear the motherfucking sports bra.

NYC Day 2 was everything! First @brittanyallen.atx is an absolute gem of a human being and I'm convinced we're besties now. @mattymaggiacomo put on one of his funniest walk & talks to date, old friends met new friends, and @alextoussaint25 programmed precisely the R&B run I needed. Then I walked the city for the equivalent of a half marathon, lol.

@mattymaggiacomo is the reason I got into Peloton. He would start talking and the next thing I knew, I'd run for 30 minutes and I didn't hate every second. He can be light and funny and full of dad jokes, and then he can passionately speak up for marginalized communities, often in the same class.

I started taking his classes because the distraction helped me get through the exercise. But when life got challenging, I found myself looking to his classes for a different reason. It was like 30 minutes of sunshine to break up the grey clouds. I always felt just a little bit better afterwards, a little bit more able to face whatever was coming.

I know it's his job to talk for 30 minutes while we walk. I know that thousands of people feel the same way about him that I do. Nevertheless, I will be forever grateful that I had the chance to look him in the eye and thank him for pulling me through the hardest time in my life, even though he didn't know he was pulling me.

They say you shouldn't meet your heroes, but I think there should be an asterisk that says "unless your hero is Matty," because he was the kindest, most genuine person. Meeting him will forever be one of the highlights of my life. Core memory formed.

Could what happened to Secretary @pete.buttigieg happen in Texas? Part 2: Probably not.

The Texas Family Code has 2 built-in protections regarding anonymous reports. The Reporter's identity is CONFIDENTIAL in Texas, but DFPS statewide intake is not allowed to accept anonymous reports. Anonymous reports must be referred to law enforcement with the idea that people are less likely to make false reports to law enforcement. Even then, there is a second safety guard that requires CPS to corroborate some part of the report before a full investigation is authorized.

Traveled to El Paso. Nephew @loaf.ofbrad became a US Marine. Traveled to Galveston. Got on a cruise ship. Traveled to Mexico. Traveled to Brooklyn. Tried CrossFit at @deancrossfit Pride parade. Knicks won. Big Ellie's birthday. Back to San Antonio. 14th wedding anniversary. My BFF graduated. New to me Ford Bronco Sport. Back to El Paso. @epchihuahuas_chico Now it's July.

What a blessing to be tired from the things I chose. ❤️

So just over a week ago, I finally tried a CrossFit class at @deancrossfit with Coach @chris.sainsbury

NGL I was nervous. I looked at the WOD and saw that there was a lot of rowing and thanks to @ashpryor_thatsme I at least knew that part would be doable, but there was also jump rope and y'all, the last time I jumped rope was 2019 and I was terrible at it.

Honestly? It was so fun. It was a partner workout and Coach Chris partnered me pretty expertly with @kerphout He had the whole class do RX for the row distance, but scaled the jump rope to single unders for those of us still "working on" double unders (which for me means having never done one).

It was not my first time at this gym, but my previous visits, I opted for individual training. This was my first-ever CrossFit class, and yeah, I can see the draw. It's a great vibe. I've always found Dean in particular to be very welcoming. If you're in Brooklyn (Crown Heights area), definitely check it out, even if you're new to CrossFit.
