POV: Twirling into My Civic Purpose

One thing about being in D.C.: It will reignite my 🔥 for civic engagement every single time.

Though I get the privilege to work in this space daily, there’s something about being surrounded by people who care deeply about public service, policy, community and the future of our democracy that turns the intensity all the way back up.

So much so that I’m thinking it might be time to bring back #MomentumMinutes. Years ago, I created this content stream as my part in helping us slow down, think critically, stay engaged and build a more reflective democracy together.

Am I here to be seen or to be useful?

Just touched down in D.C. for the Congressional Black Caucus, and that’s one of the questions I’m carrying with me during this trip.

Lately, I’ve been praying that no matter the room, conference or gathering God allows me to enter, I don’t get so caught up in being present that I miss the purpose of being there.

Because attention asks, “Did people see me?”
Influence asks, “What do they now understand, trust, or turn to me for?”

In spaces like CBC that are full of thought leaders, strong convictions, important conversations, and people committed to moving our communities forward, I want to listen well, connect meaningfully, and leave asking: What can we actually do with what we heard here?

That’s the challenge I’m giving myself during this trip, and one I’d love to carry together.

It’s my baby’s birthday. 🥹💕

It’s funny … no matter how many birthdays we celebrate, there are still so many moments when I look at Brandi in all of her motherly, wife, and boss-woman glory and somehow still see the little girl in this picture.

So one of the gifts I wanted to give her this year was simply a reminder: Little Brandi is still there.

A reminder to set down, even if only for a moment, all the titles she carries so beautifully and come back to the little girl in her. The carefree girl with the bubbly spirit who found pure bliss in Easy-Bake Ovens, riding bikes around the neighborhood, and playing on her Game Boy.

Because she does so much for so many people, she deserves moments that ask nothing of her. Moments to dream, play, laugh, and remember the joy and jubilation that have always been hers.

Happy birthday, little Brandi.
