One of Scandinavia’s most popular attractions is the Vasa Museum, home to the remarkably preserved warship that sank just minutes into its maiden voyage in 1628.

Built to showcase Sweden’s naval power, it was ambitious but structurally unstable. The hull was too narrow, the gun decks too heavy, and there wasn’t enough ballast to keep it steady. A gust of wind pushed it over, water rushed in through the open gun ports, and it quickly sank in front of onlookers, claiming more than 30 lives.

What makes it even more fascinating is that it lay at the bottom of Stockholm Harbor for over 300 years, preserved by the cold, brackish Baltic waters, before being raised in 1961. Today, it stands as one of the best-preserved 17th-century ships in the world ⚓️

It may not look like it at first glance, but this is one of Barcelona’s most meaningful murals

It was installed in 2014 to commemorate 300 years since the Siege of Barcelona (1713–1714), and reflects a turning point in the city’s history

After the fall to Bourbon forces, Catalonia lost its self-government, institutions, and legal system 🏛

But instead of depicting war or defeat, the artist chose a kiss: a symbol of freedom, unity, and healing to represent what was lost and what has endured ❤️‍🩹

From afar, it looks like a single image, but step closer and you’ll see that it’s actually made up of over 4,000 individual photos submitted by locals, each one answering the simple, yet powerful, question:

"what does freedom mean to you?"

Naboo actually exists… and it’s in Spain 🇪🇸

Plaza de España in Seville was originally built in 1928 for the Ibero-American Exposition, but it found a second life as a filming location for Naboo in Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones

The detail here is unreal, and it genuinely feels like stepping into another world 🪐🌌✨

A little guide to exploring Olympic National Park as a day trip from Seattle ⛰️🌲🌊

It's been more than 5 years since I visited, but Olympic is still one of my favorite places in the US!

There's too much to see for just one day, but Hoh Rain Forest and Ruby Beach really showcased how diverse the park is, from the lush, moss-covered forests to the dramatic Pacific coastline. I'd love to return someday and visit Hurricane Ridge, Lake Crescent, Sol Duc Falls, and more ❤️

This 17th-century painting looks like an abstract mess until you take a closer look 🤯

Housed at the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, this painting is an anamorphic portrait of King Charles I of England, and it was actually a high-stakes political secret for many years. After the king's execution in 1649, owning his likeness was treason, so royalists hid his face in optical illusions like this.

The image only makes sense when a cylindrical mirror is placed over the skull emblem in the center, which allowed royalists to safely hide their loyalty from a regime that punished royal imagery with death.

The portrait was created anonymously and has been on display at the Nationalmuseum since 1865 🎨👑

Nestled in Prague's Old Town, this statue of Sigmund Freud represents the anxiety and uncertainty of intellectuals in the modern world 🧠

Stumbling upon this statue was incredible - I hadn't heard about it before I went so I got to experience the wonder of it right then and there. It's so life-like that apparently some people have even mistaken it for a real person in danger over the years and called for help

Can you believe that every inch of this place was carved, painted, and gilded by hand 🤯

This church interior contains an estimated 7 tons of gold leaf, took more than 150 years to build (1605-1765), and is often called one of the most beautiful in Latin America ⛪️✨️

Built in the 11th Century and classified as a National Monument since 1910, São Jorge Castle provides one of the most beautiful views of the city and the Tagus River 🏞

Main attractions include walking the castle walls and defense towers, seeing historic cannons and ancient architectural ruins, and watching peacocks roam free in the courtyard 🦚

Visitors can even see baby peafowl wandering the grounds in the spring and summer months! ☀️

Mosteiro dos Jerónimos was built during Portugal's Age of Discovery in the 16th-Century. It was commissioned by King Manuel I to celebrate Vasco da Gama’s successful voyage to India and was competely funded by the wealth of Portugal's global spice trade 🌶

It was originally inhabited by the Order of Saint Jerome and even survived the catastrophic 1755 Lisbon earthquake. While it's no longer an active, practicing monastery, it is now recognized as an UNESCO World Heritage Site and operates as a historical museum and public monument 🏛

#unesco

Alfama is Lisbon's oldest and most atmospheric district, well known for its vibrant colors, cobblestone street, and sweeping viewpoints (miradouros) that offer incredible panoramic views of the city and the Tagus River

Like the monastery, it famously survived the 1755 earthquake, preserving its authentic, medieval charm ✨️

#alfama

Belém is Lisbon's historic riverside district and is official birthplace of Portugal's famous dessert, the pastel de nata 🍳🥧

The neighborhood is full of UNESCO World Heritage Sites and iconic landmarks, including Belém Tower, the stunning Jerónimos Monastery, and the sail-shaped Monument to the Discoveries ⛵️🏛

#belem #belém

Miradouro de Santa Luzia is located in the Alfama neighborhood, but it still deserves its own slide 🌅☀️

Located only an hour from Salzburg, this Austrian village is one of the most photographed places in the entire world! 😍

While Hallstatt is only home to 800 residents, the village sees approximately 3 million visitors each year, or nearly 10k visitors each day.

The village and surrounding landscape was recognized as an UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997 for its stunning alpine beauty and its significance in human history with operating the world's oldest salt mine!

Visitors can explore the village on foot, boat on the Hallstatt Sea, spend time at the local shops and cafes, and visit the charnel house (bone house) at St. Michael's Chapel. It's eerie, yet fascinating, and displays over 600 painted human skulls.

The village is only a short bus ride and a cable car away from incredible alpine views, mountain sheep sightings, and the Dachstein Giant Ice Cave 🧊

The @montereybayaquarium is one of the best in the world, and let me tell you why ❤️

Everything is built around conservation, rehabilitation, and marine research

The aquarium is best known for their beloved, rescued sea otters and for housing the world's only surrogacy program, where non-releasable female otters act as surrogate mothers to raise stranded pups and teach them the skills needed to survive in the wild 🦦💕

Another reason why this place is so impressive is its massive three-story, 28-foot tall kelp forest exhibit. Only a handful of aquariums around the world maintain living kelp exhibits due to the highly specific, fragile conditions that they require 🌿🌊

Lastly, people around the world can share in everything that the aquarium has to offer by tuning into their several live cams showing off their iconic sea otters, kelp forest, jellyfish, penguins, and more. Access to the live cams is available on their wesbite from 7am-7pm PT daily 🐟🪼🪸
