there’s a fierce joy in belonging to something you love. and there is a deeply defining mix of pride and gratitude that comes with being chosen to represent it.

hula is something i rarely talk about because it’s one of the few things that’s hard for me to talk about— because i will actually cry if i try to explain how much it means to me and i do try to avoid involuntary tears. but competition season is here!! and last year was just the best in so many ways and i’ve sat on this feeling for almost a year, so this is me trying 💫

hula is one of my life’s best constants. it is consistent laughter and unfiltered joy as much as it is disciplined and direct in instruction. it’s shaped me into someone who values control, precision, and freedom in expression, and gifted me the grace to act in alignment. it’s given me the sisters i never had, and so much more family to love and who love me and my family back. my kumu hula is brilliant and we’re all just the luckiest because our hālau and its happy culture are defined by her beautiful, generous heart. her kindness runs as deep as the roots of her lineage— to me, she is a living reminder that genuine care leaves a legacy of its own.

i’m grateful to have been raised in hula, and glad to continue to choose it. the people and love it has filled my life with have made my world infinitely more vibrant.

last november, our hālau presented four groups and four soloists at iā ‘oe e ka lā. i was one of fourteen wahine doing our best to honor all the people who put us on that stage. i cannot wait to do it again this year ❤️ by @kellynelise

ye olde good time !! 🥳✨

we played princesses and one poor excuse for a wizard at the renaissance faire. ‘twas a hell of a timeth, literally and figuratively, in the shimmering, sweltering 112° heat. gnomes were hunted, thirst was quenched with hoarded water, and cone hats (historically, hennins) were endlessly adjusted. the fortune-telling witch divined that i would meet the person i’m meant to marry this year (although apparently i already met him in passing??) and we were gifted fairy dust from another cone-hat-wearing princess. chaos and magic. 🔥🏰🦄🧚‍♂️✨ by @kellynelise

belated lei day 🥳🌺✨

we made wili lei inspired by sunset colors while the sun set and it was soo nice. the colors!! being surrounded by baskets of flowers! we snapped more than a hundred photos of just the flowers alone. raquelle is really good at making lei so she taught me and leahi how to braid the flowers into the lei using rafia. twist, wrap, foot cramp. i made my lei too big and it wouldn’t fit on my head. we wore comfy clothes, snacked so much, and only listened to josh tatofi. flowers from the store, foraged by raquelle, and cut from my backyard. hibiscus gifted from leahi’s mom. you can’t buy happiness but sometimes on special occasions you can hold it in your hands, place it on your head, wear it around your neck. ✨

in february, you’re gonna feel it all. in waves and red ribbons and layers of pink frosting and untamed laughter, rippling with joy and breathless from living room dancing. and your hair will be curled and your cheeks dusted with blush and you’ll have cake and caviar in your belly. and sometimes it will be colder, but the sky will still be purple orange pink, and you’ve seen days like that before. and because you’ve seen it, you see love everywhere— you see it in everyone, and everything is brighter. and after february, and perhaps because of everything that led to february, you feel more. you feel more than ever before. ❤️✨ by @kellynelise
