Most artists release a record and then figure out what comes next. @kellypadrick already knows. Her new EP Butterflies landed this month, and by January 2027 she will be in Montreal filming the video for “Shine,” the twelfth cinematic short she has made with director Patricia Chica @chicatronica

That kind of continuity is the through-line of Padrick’s career. The indie pop and country-pop singer, songwriter and actress has been writing music since she was five years old, first in Rhode Island and later in New York City, where she is now based. What began as a childhood habit hardened into a recognisable signature: hazy, dream-pop harmonies layered under songwriting that refuses to settle into one lane, and a storytelling instinct that keeps the emotion legible even when the production turns atmospheric.

Butterflies, produced by @MarcCopely, leans into the nostalgic end of that range. It arrives as the latest entry in a discography that stretches back two decades, beginning with Haze in 2005 and continuing through Carmine Street (2007), Hello My Love (2009), Soulmate (2011), The Kind of Girl (2013), Dear Love (2014) and It’s Only Me / On the Line (2016). Scattered between the albums are projects and singles including Fires, The Real Me, “I’ll Try” and “Shine” — a body of work substantial enough that Butterflies reads less like a debut statement and more like a writer returning to familiar territory with sharper tools. #indiemusic #kellypadrick #singer #chicatronica #butterflies taken in New York City by @kellypadrick

@kellypadrick Looks Back on a Love That Couldn’t Last in “BUT, BLUE”. 🎼💙Kelly Padrick revisits the complicated space between love and goodbye on “But, Blue,” a nostalgic country-pop cut from her latest EP, Butterflies. The Rhode Island-born singer-songwriter’s new project marks a stylistic chapter shaped alongside guitarist and producer Mark Copely, trading some of the electronic elements of her earlier work for a lighter, retro-inspired country landscape.

“But, Blue” centers on a former couple who find themselves together again for one long drive. There is no dramatic reconciliation waiting at the other end and no attempt to rewrite what happened. Instead, they share the road for a day, knowing that once the sun disappears, they will have to say goodbye again.

That restraint is what gives the song its emotional pull. Padrick leans into memory without turning it into fantasy, capturing the strange familiarity that can remain between two people even after their relationship has ended. The road-trip framing gives “But, Blue” a cinematic quality, allowing the passing time and eventual sunset to become part of the story itself.

Padrick’s expressive vocal approach is particularly suited to material like this. Rather than pushing the heartbreak into melodrama, she lets the song live in its quieter details, where affection, distance, and acceptance can exist at the same time.

Within Butterflies, “But, Blue” also reinforces the EP’s larger focus on looking back without becoming trapped there. The project explores resilience, past relationships, and the decision to keep moving forward, ultimately framing nostalgia as something to acknowledge rather than somewhere to stay.

“But, Blue” understands that sometimes closure is not a grand final conversation. Sometimes it is simply one last ride before the sun goes down.
