Today, October 1st, is more than pink breast cancer month. It actually is my personal anniversary of diagnosis of Invasive Lobular breast cancer, a type of breast cancer that evades being seen on imaging. Yes, 100% get your mammograms, but if you notice or feel ANY changes to your body, your breasts, your underarms GET IT CHECKED! DO NOT PASS GO even if your doctor says it is nothing and you have a clean mammogram or ultrasound as I was told. Lobular breast cancer (ILC) is the second most common, yet it is considered rare as approximately 10% breast cancer diagnoses are lobular. It grows in tiny lines made up of tiny cells, not a mass like golfball. When I was diagnosed I was told by my local doctor if he had to have breast cancer he would want lobular, as it is slow growing. He didn’t know what he was talking about as there is SO LITTLE research of lobular. It is a DIFFERENT disease, NOT all breast cancer is the same. Lobular has been treated as ductal breast cancer, and patients are not getting correct treatments. In fact, because lobular evades most imaging, patients often are stage 4, but because the cancer is not seen they are kept out of trials that can save lives because they do not qualify as stage 4 patients. It is only discovered after they pass away if they donated their body to lobular research which consists of a handful of doctors in total throughout the world. Remember my local doctor who told me lobular would’ve been the kind he wanted? Being so uninformed he did not know that lobular has very unique features, one of them being that lobular has a greater tendency to recur and to recur many years later. You are not considered safe after the usual five years. Lobular returns in weird parts of one’s body, very difficult to detect 9,13, or more years later. A person having been diagnosed with lobular NEVER feels safe and at rest, always lives in fear knowing that it could be lurking and/or return. WHEN you see your friends or loved ones and they look great and healthy, just know that they are still struggling, and not always at peace. Treatment for many breast cancers are ONGOING for 10 years as standard of care & experience severe side effects. 6! by @kellywillner

Gotta celebrate Medal Monday!

On a more important note, I spoke to a live crowd of 25,000 people right before the Princess Half on International Cancer Day. I spoke about the sneakiness of Lobular breast cancer & how it does NOT show up on imaging, so PLEASE check yourselves and listen to your body. Oh yeah, celebrating 5 years to the day! 💗

such a powerful day today, personally & for the world: diagnostic cancerversary for me 😢, atonement; i.e. Yom Kippur, AND the start of “Pink” month: breast cancer awareness: You know what this means, CHECK YOURSELVES, tell the women in your lives to get a mammogram, and when you donate, PLEASE don’t donate blindly. Businesses use this month for promotion & sales, be mindful to donate to genuine causes that make a difference: metastatic @metavivor , @lobularbreastcanceralliance (dearest to my heart as this breast cancer is the second most common, yet NEEDS RESEARCH as it is UNDERFUNDED and has the most RECURRENCE & worse prognosis.)
