I recently stumbled upon this photo of myself from 2014 in Greenpoint, BK. I remember being her so clearly. Filled with so much excitement for life, so much ambition, and wonder. She was wildly curious, earnest, optimistic, pure…she had a longing to see and experience the world. I think of the journey she’s been on the last decade and am overwhelmed to think of everything she’s been through. Her winding and twisting journey that has brought her to all corners of the world. All the places she had once dreamed to go. The people that have crossed her path. The ones that have touched her, encouraged her or redirected her course. The love, the loss, the tears of sadness and joy, the disappointment. Now I look back and realize all of those disappointments led her to a life more beautiful than she could have imagined. One that isn’t one dimensional. One that includes depth and meaning that can only come from experiencing all facets of life. I’ve been noticing lately that often what I had always dreamed of is right under my nose, but I resist it because it looks different to how I thought it would. I’m learning to concern myself more with ‘does this feel good’ than ‘does this look how I thought it would.’ I find myself nostalgic for those times before social media. Before documenting everything for the internet. Before tagging, likes and photoshop. Before you didn’t feel left out or left behind if you didn’t brand yourself. And yet, there’s so much beauty here too - knowledge, community, opportunities…I’ve personally found it difficult to reconcile the two. Still, I know I have so much to say, and to share, and I’d like to start sharing here again. I’m not sure why I was drawn to this photo. Perhaps because it reminded me how far I’ve come. How proud I am of myself, despite the fact that life still feels messy and uncertain. It reminded me that I am still her. It’s funny how the ups and downs, twist and turns of life can make you feel disconnected from your spirit. How the world can sometimes muddy your mind and your heart. But, underneath it all, you’re still there. A more mature, resilient and compassionate version of who you were. by @kellywoods
