POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Most of these drawings are done as a way to workshop ideas and shapes for paintings. They are often on bar napkins, printer paper or whatever I can find to get it out of my head & hand. They are also usually abandoned once I feel I’ve gotten the “bones” of it down. There are, however, a few of these drawings that are given full attention and craftsmanship. Maybe a dozen or less. Here’s one. taken in Silver Lake by @kelsey.wright.art

“Liquid Life” (2016- 36” x 48” Oil on Canvas)
This piece has an interesting inspiration story...
While walking home one night in my KTown neighborhood, I came upon a jarring and concerning scene. (Swipe to see. *Trigger warning- Blood*)
There is no other way to explain it other that just “a lot of blood” that wasn’t there earlier. It was mostly located in one square foot spot on the sidewalk but also scattered in drips that formed lines where the bleeding must’ve walked. There was nothing else to imply something was still happening. Not having experienced something like this, I called my dad and asked if this is the kind of thing I’m supposed to tell someone about and, if so, who? I eventually kept walking, realizing that might not be a good place to just stand around and I decided to attribute it to the sprawling construction across the street.

The event got me thinking about blood and how the sight of it incited a feeling of worry and concern in me. I started thinking about all the bad things we associate with it. All the loss and pain it’s often accompanied by.

I started to paint when I got home and continued to process what I saw as I went. I reflected on all the good things we should associate with blood- namely, LIFE itself.

The fear of blood only further stigmatizes our humanity and alienates us to the reality of our existence. This piece serves as my expressive reminder to appreciate all the fragility and beauty of life and to not fear the reality of it. by @kelsey.wright.art

Around this time last year, we were assessing the damage as a community ravaged by fires while already sitting in the fresh ashes of an industry meltdown made all the more difficult by ever-soaring economic inequality.

Our world of artists, craftspeople, storytellers, and neighbors could merely standby and watch as everything collapsed in on itself, once again.
Los Angeles, as it is for many, is by no means my origin but it is proudly my home. While we will always be rebuilding, I do find hope in the community willing to be reborn as often as necessary to pursue our collective joys.

Every fire in this life leaves behind a fertile ground, enriched by the ash of what grew before. We are never at the end when we recognize our strength within a cycle of endless new beginnings.
