Spring loves part two ✨ by @kelseylcolon
I am from the sun — from warmth and life. I am from the deep blue of the ocean the sand and the shore from the quietness and the roar. I am from hurricanes without and within, the palm trees that bend in the wind. I am from sandbars and sandy cars. I am from ashy knees and caramel thighs, from “de ojitos negros, muñequita de mi amor” and my grandma’s gold bracelets harmonizing. I am from power, from refusal, from the Taíno people who would not be erased.  I am from colonization and fetishization. I am from the enchanted island Boriquen and my Ashkenazi ancestors starting again on another island New York. I am from the juice of ripe mangos and freshly picked guava. From meringue, salsa, bachata, to coquís and coconut milk. I am a spice that permeates — I cannot be contained, that is my gift. I am from, “You’re basically white” and from, “What are you?” To “Go back to your country” and “Do you wash windows?” From bites others take to see if I measure up to their taste. Too much or not enough? They add water and don’t realize that I am the ocean. Their thirst will never be quenched. I am from True Love Waits and from Sunday morning, Sunday night, Wednesday night, and Friday night church. I am from “You’ll be such a great mom one day” and inline rollerblades.  I am from sitting down for dinner every night and from “two tostones each” and pass the adobo. I am from picnics and bike rides and swimming and American girl dolls. I am from confusion and cross-stitching from generational lullabies and lies. I am from from death and breath.  magical photos by @kclostetter #teamschwenk #loveyourordinary #instaproofs #thefindlab by @kelseylcolon
- I’d like to think the trees Hold our memories Even after They’ve held us These limbs have been, and will be, Wild In their roots, they carry my story held and beheld my ancestors And shared the same sweet air with my father and those before him They have born witness to the little girl’s laugh and the hot chocolate drops on branches on winter mornings They tell of the bare feet that reached the highest leaves They honor the tears from overwhelming sorrow The quiet keepers of my memoires Silent ambassadors of my life I inhale My palm rests on the warm trunk In one moment I am 7 and also 37 I exhale They are holding me They will hold my children Photos by the amazing @kclostetter by @kelseylcolon

Sometimes in January you have to travel West to surprise some friends and eat the best Puerto Rican food from @saborboricuapnw and go to local markets and realize you would love to travel the world photographing local marketers (people who vendor and/or attend markets). 🥬🍎 by @kelseylcolon
Signs of life 🌺 by @kelseylcolon
Robert Smalls was the first Black captain of a U.S. Navy vessel. In 1862 while white officers were sleeping on land, Smalls and other enslaved crew members hijacked the confederate transport ship they were being forced to labor on. He disguised himself in the captain’s uniform, and navigated checkpoints using the correct signals. He brought the ship to the Union blockade, giving them the weapons and intelligence aboard while also freeing himself, the crew, and their families. He then became the first Black naval captain and later served five terms in the U.S. Congress. There’s a small sign at end of The Battery in Charleston that tells his story. One of the few places where history & his story was told — not erased, not whitewashed, not sanitized. That was my favorite spot there. Charleston is charming AND at what/whose cost? These photos I share hold a tension. Where my eye sees technical beauty, it also recognizes the cost that created it. My body notices the absence of stories about the people who created the city. The stories of enslaved people who built the city and never received rest, profit, or housing in return. In spaces like this, I wonder: How do stories get told when whyte supremacy writes the narrative? Whose story gets overlooked, erased, and/or sterilized? I know firsthand that there is power in how a story is captured and portrayed — that representation is critical for drawing in all people and weaving story into narrative. May my lens tell the stories of wholeness, belonging, and inclusion. by @kelseylcolon

Happy Normal February 15th Day to this guy. The best of the best and he’ll never see this bc he’s chronically never online. Probably bc he’s busy making me the best matcha in the world ♥️ 🍵 Photo by the incomparable @adambarnesphoto by @kelseylcolon
The way I have loved every single one of these celebrations of love. Round up of shades of pink for today. ♥️ 💕 PS. On Valentine’s day while I was in college, someone left a cupcake outside of my dorm door so I bit into it but in the middle was a reeces and I’m v deathly allergic to peanuts so while all these couples were meeting up for their dates in the dorm lobby, I was being wheeled though on a stretcher on my way to the ambulance outside to go the emergency room. Happy Valentine’s Day. by @kelseylcolon
