In a shipping container in the Arverne Alley you can find @carlelsaesser’s VISIBLE SEEM installation.

Above a suburban family home, clouds bloom across the sky and a lighthouse rises over the horizon. Using a hand-painted matte to expand footage from a feature film in progress, this installation transforms an ordinary house into an image of the romantic, well-lived family dream.

Born in Canada and based in Brooklyn, New York, artist Kelsey Shwetz @kelseyshwetz received her MFA from Columbia University where she currently teaches painting. She is interested in observational reality and abstraction, specifically where our gaze settles and the interventions that disrupt that field of vision.

“Light functions as a primary organizing force throughout the work. Domestic illumination, nocturnal lamplight, and mediated light from screens divide the image into overlapping zones of visibility and shadow. Interiors often bleed into exteriors, while landscape appears embedded within or at odds with architectural structure. These moments of partial visibility disrupt a stable point of view, creating scenes that feel recognizable yet unsettled, shaped as much by memory and attention as by physical description.”

Excerpt from one of my fav Schuyler poems:

Light on leaves,
so much to see, and
all I really see is that
owl, its bulk troubling
the twilight. I’ll
soon forget it: what
is there I have not forgot?
Or one day will forget:
this garden, the breeze
in stillness, even
the words, Korean mums.

“Burnout”, 24”x30”

From the press release:
The revelations of Shwetz’s paintings lie in their profound embodiment, despite the general lack of human presence. These are, in every sense, interior paintings, fleshed out into scenes of sense. No small battles are waged here, and many more questions are raised. What is “natural” anyway, in these times? How does one wait, bearing through the idle flurry of thoughts between appointments? At what point does desire become unsavoury, particularly in the face of things not done? (Asked another way, when does escapism veer into withdrawal?) And how exactly can something rise to the level of symbol, without witnesses?
