Some masks are worn to deceive.

Mine were worn to survive.

I became who I needed to be for everyone else, while slowly losing pieces of myself in the process.

Living in the shadows felt safe. Familiar. Predictable.

But freedom called my name louder than fear ever could.

So I let it all die.

The people-pleasing.
The pretending.
The versions of me that no longer fit.

Taking off the mask wasn’t easy, but my heart is no longer suffocating.

What’s left isn’t perfection.

It’s peace.

Now I know why the caged bird sings.

As an adolescent 90s male models were inspirational. I can remember flipping through popular magazine catalogs seeing Tyson Beckford, Djimon Hounsou, and Jason Olive as the face of high end fashion. I miss the aesthetic and the simplicity that showcased natural beauty and talent. Here is my take- Kelz
