I’ve been a stranger to Toa Payoh most of my life. I only started making an effort to see this famous dragon playground a couple years back. Parents would sit by the benches, kids would be running along the spine, grandparents taking photos from below.

But this phenomenon only occured from a very specific time from 5-6.45pm. When the sun was not too hot and it was early enough for families to head off for dinner.

Once I came with a friend late at night and we sat on one of the benches, eating our melting Mc Donald’s chococones from the safra across the road and having long talks. The place was empty, just the two of us seated in an almost empty field next to a “dead” playground. Somehow instead of feeling vulnerable, it felt, comforting. Alone in the dark but next to this massive inanimate object.

Since that day, I thought of photographing this late at night, but to give it some life in the darkness. Managed to do so with a long exposure while running around firing off multiple flashes. My partner just stood behind the camera holding my barang barang bewildered. The couple hidden behind the playground who were making out was initially taken aback but soon got back to their own business.

Maybe one day I’ll come back to retake this again, but this time with people inhabiting the dragon.

Stressful photograph to make cos I knew I could only make one singular shot at the risk of getting chased out.

From where I was, I synchronised a video recording of the NDP preview just based off the lighting cues and audience LED wristbands just to fire off the camera for exactly 15 seconds at the tail end of ‘Song for Singapore’ in Act 3 of the show.

Lo and behold, the exact moment my shutter closed, we were told to pack it up and leave. It didnt matter, I got the shot I needed.

Promptly left for birthday sashimi buffet haha.

May or may not be the last fireworks photo I make of NDP26. Ps. If anyone has tickets for 9 August….I wouldn’t mind photographing fireworks from inside the stadium 😉

Literally waited an entire decade to photograph this exact view. The last time fireworks were fired from the rim of the stadium was in 2016 and the only photograph I made that year was from the stadium’s promenade with my little G7X.

Fast forward 10 years later and what do you know, someone decided to build a hideous condo in one of the Lorongs so the almostly perfectly centred view of the National Stadium is ever so slightly marred.

Anyway, similar to my previous image with Golden Mile Centre in the foreground, this view will also probably not be possible anymore given the pace of redevelopment and NS square opening next year. But you never know, they may hold the parade in the sports hub again next year.

Have been waiting eons for NDP to make a return to the National Stadium since 2016 so that I can make this photograph.

I prob wont ever get to do this again since the next NDP will probably be at NS square and Golden Mile Complex will have finished its major refurbishment with the addition of its new tower block.

Probably one of the most difficult fireworks shots that I’ve ever done since it was a comedy of errors. Many people had already choped the windows which were smashed open, so I had to settle for a midway jammed window. It was then super difficult to get the tripod to stick the entire camera cantilevering out of the window. And then it rained… which made the fireworks super smoky.
